Radio Technician (Motorola Systems)
Detroit, MI (Onsite/Field) W2 Contract 12+ Months
Job Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Radio Technician with experience supporting Motorola two-way radio systems used in public safety environments (e.g., police and fire). This role is responsible for programming, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of handheld and mobile radios, as well as supporting antenna systems and dispatch-related infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities Program and configure Motorola handheld and mobile (vehicle-mounted) radios in accordance with state standards (e.g., State of Michigan or similar regulatory environments) Install radio equipment in vehicles, including mounting radios, running wiring, installing brackets, and modifying vehicle interiors (cutting/drilling as needed) Install, inspect, and maintain radio antennas on vehicles and building rooftops (occasional rooftop work required) Troubleshoot and repair radio communication issues, including RF interference, signal loss, and connectivity problems Support backend radio systems that interface with dispatch operations (e.g., repeaters, infrastructure, and communication networks) Perform preventative maintenance and system testing to ensure reliability of mission-critical communication systems Maintain documentation for installations, configurations, and repairs Provide technical support to field users and ensure proper functionality of all radio equipment Required Qualifications
2+ years of experience working with two-way radio systems, preferably Motorola Hands-on experience programming Motorola radios (portable and mobile units) Experience installing radios in vehicles, including wiring, mounting, and equipment configuration Familiarity with RF systems, antenna installation, and troubleshooting Ability to work with tools and perform physical installation tasks (drilling, mounting, cable routing) Comfort working at heights (e.g., rooftops) on an occasional basis Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills Valid driver's license Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting public safety radio systems (police, fire, EMS) Familiarity with trunked radio systems (P25, DMR, etc.) Understanding of dispatch communication systems and supporting infrastructure Background in field service, telecommunications, or emergency services FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) Ideal Candidate Background
Prior experience working with or supporting police, fire, or emergency response radio systems Experience installing and maintaining radio equipment in emergency vehicles Comfortable in a field-based, hands-on technical role that includes both installation and system support
