The University of Montana invites applications for an

Assistant Director of Residential Education and Engagement

for UM Housing. The Assistant Director manages day‑to‑day activities related to full‑time and student staff supervision in the residence halls and apartments, staffing, the residential curriculum, living‑learning programs in the residence halls, and the residential experience. You will work to develop positive, safe, and inclusive communities under the guidelines established in the University of Montana and UM Housing policies. As it relates to the position responsibilities, you will have the authority to make commitments and policies that affect department operations.

Responsibilities

Supervise Area Coordinators/Community Directors and other assigned staff, providing leadership to residential education teams and paraprofessional student staff across residence halls and apartments

Serve on the Housing Extended Leadership Team, contributing to departmental policy development, strategic planning, and cross‑functional collaboration

Lead, implement, and assess the residential curriculum and student engagement initiatives, using data and learning outcomes to drive continuous improvement

Oversee all student employment processes for Residential Education, including recruitment, selection, hiring software administration, onboarding, scheduling, payroll coordination, and HR compliance

Ensure high‑quality residential customer service and oversee operational logistics, including staffing systems, administrative processes, and summer conference support

Collaborate with Facilities, Operations, Fiscal, and campus partners to align policies, procedures, technology, and services that support the residential experience

Manage residential education systems and compliance processes, including StarRez administration, conduct adjudication, policy oversight, and adherence to professional standards

Participate in on‑call rotation, address complex or sensitive situations with sound judgment, support training initiatives, and carry out additional duties as assigned by senior leadership

A Master’s Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel Administration, Public Administration or Counseling or four (4) years progressive experience in Housing management position, including live in‑residence hall or apartment experience

A strong knowledge of Housing and/or Community Standards and student personnel administration, student staff training and supervision, and diversity issues common within University Housing and Community Standards organizations

The ability to understand and utilize new technology within the office; establish, maintain, process and update files, records, and documents; Microsoft Office, Maxient, StarRez, or other database, spreadsheets, etc., for data viewing, collection and entry

Possess a thorough ability to communicate with a wide variety of people in a precise and professional manner, both orally, electronically, and through written word

Ability to maintain an organized workload requiring multitasking and the need to prioritize various responsibilities with little supervision

Ability to coordinate work schedules with staff, students, faculty, guests, and visitors to ensure that both customer and building needs are met

Ability to formulate and enforce policies, complete departmental strategic planning, and assist with development of short‑and long‑term goals within an operation

Experience with safety and security systems, including fire safety systems, and training of live‑in staff on proper use and emergency response procedures

Ability and willingness to participate in an on‑call duty rotation for the UM Housing community 365 days of the year and respond to situations as needed

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with conference housing program

Experience with analyzing and resolving conflict, team building, group dynamics, crisis management, and the ability for problem solving

Demonstrated ability to prioritize and delegate multiple tasks; effectively train, hire, evaluate, and communicate performance expectations with staff

Ability to work nights and weekends during certain times of the year and respond to emergency situations as needed

Provides leadership for staff in responding to student quality of life issues, enforcement of departmental policies and procedures, coordination of services, and responses to crises and emergencies

Position Details Position is full‑time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
