
Assistant Recreation Director

Under the direction of the Recreation Division Director, the Assistant Recreation Division Director is responsible for planning, organizing, managing, and directing all activities of the Recreation Division. Key responsibilities include administering and implementing division programs; developing goals, objectives, marketing plan and supporting procedures; and ensuring their successful execution. The role also involves preparing and managing budgets, coordinating division activities with other District divisions and external agencies, and providing administrative support to the Division Director and Executive Director.
This position has significant discretion and is distinguished from the Recreation General Manager by its broader responsibility for overseeing all recreation programs and performing high-level administrative functions for the entire Recreation Division.

Oversee and manage the day‑to‑day services and activities of the assigned Recreation Division units including planning, coordinating, administering, and supervising comprehensive recreation programs for all ages and abilities. This includes but is not limited to community recreation programs, sports programs, outdoor recreation.
Identify emerging trends and evolving community needs and develop strategic plans that address both immediate priorities and long‑term goals for Recreation Division programs.
Reviews, evaluates and develops policy for recreational activities, facilities, and programs to ensure effectiveness, high quality, cost effectiveness, and customer satisfaction.
Manage and participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned programs; recommend and administer policies and procedures.
Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; recommend, within departmental policy, appropriate service and staffing levels.
Supervise the activities of assigned staff and supervisors responsible for carrying out programs, services, and functions; provide supervision with an emphasis on coaching and leadership development.
Oversee the development and administration of the Recreation Division’s annual budget; forecast and ensure the efficient and effective use of personnel, equipment, materials, and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; and implement necessary adjustments.
Establish and administer joint agreements with local agencies; establish affiliation agreements with other organizations and collaborations with local and state organizations.
Serve as back up for the Recreation Division Director when unavailable.
Manage the employee vehicle safety and training program for the Recreation Division.
Assist in preparation of federal and state grants; seek sponsorships; gifts and donations.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Organization needs may influence what types of duties and responsibilities are needed.
Qualifications
Equivalent to five years’ recreation division management, supervisory, operations, community and customer relations, safety, regulatory, and administrative experience, as well as recreation organization, development, and facility management experience.
Requires bachelor’s degree in Parks & Recreation Administration, Public Administration, or closely related field, or equivalent experience and training supplemented with continuing education workshops.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to work irregular hours including weekends, holidays and evenings as needed.
Valid Driver’s License
Knowledge of current management, supervisory and leadership principles.
Ability to learn and understand various recreation software programs and manage the proper security and management of the data.
Ability to evaluate programs and report those evaluations.
Ability to promote park and recreation programs through media and public speaking at local meetings and gatherings.
Ability to create marketing campaigns by using social media, website postings, signage, public notices or appearances.
Ability to operate and use modern office equipment including computers and various software packages.
Ability to interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations related to park and recreation activities.
Skill in forward thinking and ability to identify problems or issues and develop effective solutions, resolve complex problems, and gain cooperation among interested groups.
Ability to lead others to common goals and to work cooperatively with other employees, division and department heads, and the public. Ability to accept direction for departmental and divisional improvement and shift from reactive to proactive approaches.
Knowledge of and ability to implement trends and practices in recreation services organization, management and community interests.
Ability to work with a growing District and lead and participate in collaborative activities.
Ability to prepare and present clear and concise short‑term and long‑range comprehensive recreation service program plans and reports using applicable software.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Work Environment and Physical Effort This is a non‑smoking workplace. Work is performed in an office, public meeting place, and program facility environment, and requires occasional evening meetings and weekend duties.
