The Estimator serves a vital function in the growth of Vanguard Construction & Co. Their primary responsibility is to analyze the correct scope of work on drawings, preliminary scope descriptions, specifications and also in the collected pricing with inclusions (or exclusions) so as to estimate the time, money, materials, and labor required to profitably construct an assigned project.

In seeking a highly motivated, experienced Estimator to be a Team Player, Vanguard invites the candidate to join our growing construction team. The person should have a strong background in estimating projects from start to finish, with a passion for substantiating fact from fiction, uncovering and deducing responsibilities and scope where it may not have been clearly indicated, intuiting the appropriate constructability and details of building, and with pride, delivering outstanding results. They report to their Senior Estimators, the Director of Sales and Estimating, and to the Principal and Senior Management. They also communicate to the Project Manager, Asst. PM, Superintendent and accounting staff on any job they previously estimated which is awarded and commences construction.

The Estimator will help create and maintain an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect with their fellow estimators and employees, and in representing Vanguard to subcontractors with whom they engage.

Key Responsibilities:

Consult with clients, architects, engineers, building management staff, Vanguard business development staff and other Vanguard project team members to develop and confirm a clear understanding of a project’s objectives, schedule and scope of work

Prepare take-offs of material quantities, square footages and related information to assemble pricing and bid packages

Travel to jobsites to review existing conditions, attend client meetings

Perform a thorough review of plans, specifications and drawings to identify items, equipment, material or scope that may have been inadvertently omitted, issue RFIs, a Request for Information, and corroborate if such items are accounted for in the estimate to represents the full scope of the project

Obtain multiple bids per trade and multiple suppliers for assigned projects

Analyze subcontractor bids before negotiating to confirm all scope is included.

Confirming if subcontractor is working on multiple Vanguard bids so as to consider best buy-out options

Negotiate bids offered by subcontractors to obtain the most competitive buy for Vanguard

Inform Marketing team in advance of bid due date to request information required by an RFP (such as resumes, past experience, etc.)

Review all requirements––such as minimum wage, MWBS, or specific bond requirements, to ensure Vanguard correctly includes this in the bid

Clarify inclusions and exclusions of subcontractor’s and Vanguard’s pricing before submission

After job is awarded, maintain contact with clients, architects, engineers, and vendors, and Vanguard project team, to assist in clarifying or rectifying issues

Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in construction management, architecture, engineering, mathematics, statistics, business-related discipline or equivalent work experience

Ability to read drawings

Possess excellent oral and written communications skills

Candidates should be organized and detail oriented

Candidates need to know Plan Swift, Microsoft Word, Excel, Project Manager and Outlook.

Must be a proactive individual able to handle multiple priorities and willing to assist the staff and follow through with the details of multiple projects

Primarily in-office with optional (every 2 weeks) work from home on Fridays

The estimated pay range for this position in New York is $160,000 – $180,000. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and knowledge
