Job Title:
Crewperson 3 - Roofing
Position Function:
A Roofing Crewperson is responsible for inspecting and maintaining the roofs of all buildings owned by USD 259. This includes locating and patching leaks, repairing roofs, and roof replacements. The roofing department is also responsible for waterproofing exterior basement walls to prevent leakage and called upon to retrieve balls and similar items from roofs.
Employee Punctuality and Appearance:
In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave
Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator
All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for their position
Additional Duties:
Assists with additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Equipment: This position may require the ability to use SMART boards and iPads in addition to basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine. Must always comply with WPS guidelines for equipment use.
Travel: Travel between schools and central offices is required.
Physical and Mental Demands:
Work in high places and on steep pitched roofs
Overtime possible
Respond rapidly for emergency situations as necessary
Work in non-air conditioned environment with high and low temperatures
Ability to walk long distances and stand for long periods of time
Ability to bend, twist, balance, stoop, climb steps and ladders, reach overhead
Lifting 100 lbs occasionally and light lifting frequently
Attendance and punctuality is important
Attendance at all required meetings
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Communicated effectively both verbally and written with crew members, building personnel, and others contacted through the performance of job duties
Ability to prioritize and organize, changing assignments on short notice
Perform under deadlines and work in a calm and efficient manner
Displays a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality
Ability to conform to proper standards of professional dress and appearance
Knowledge of company's mission, purpose, goals and the role of every employee in achieving each of them
Possesses general knowledge and demonstrates worthy skills in the roofing trade.
Ability to carry out assignments and perform work of good quality with minimal supervision.
Maintains current knowledge of all materials and equipment applicable in the performance of advanced roofing techniques.
Interrelations:
Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors
Will be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks
Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy
Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues
Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service
Essential Performance Responsibilities:
Performs all roofing tasks in a skilled manner
Removes old roofing utilizing roofing shovel, nail puller, or other removal equipment
Covers roofs with roofing materials other than sheet metal, such as composition shingles or sheets, or asphalt and gravel, to waterproof roofs
Cuts roofing paper to size, using knife, nails or staples it to roof in overlapping strips to form base for roofing materials
Aligns roofing material with edge of roof, and overlaps successive layers, gauging distance of overlap with chalk line, gauge on shingling hatchet, or by lines on shingles
Fastens composition shingles or sheets to roof with asphalt, cement, or nails
Cuts strips of flashing and fit them into angles formed by walls, vents, and intersecting roof surfaces
Applies alternate layers of hot asphalt or tar and roofing paper until roof covering is as specified
When applying asphalt or tar and gravel to roof, mops or pours hot asphalt or tar onto roof covering
Transports hot tar via bucket weighing up to 50 lbs or via mop cart, which is pulled to work site
Temperature of hot tar can be 500 degrees or greater
Applies gravel or pebbles over top layer, using rake or stiff bristled broom
Gravel is shoveled into wheelbarrows and pushed to the site of work
Utilizes the latest roofing methods and procedures
Display good workmanship and is able to learn new roofing systems. Display good attendance with proper notification/planning, when absent. Performs mandatory snow removal
Must be able to work in hot asphalt, shingles, Duro-Last and modified roofs
Must have the physical capability to carry hot asphalt, tear off and replace roofs, spudding and sweeping gravel roofs, climbing ladders and working close to the roof edge
Have basic knowledge in finding and repairing roof leaks
Must be able to learn how to weld laps, flashing, measure and lay deck sheets
Maintain an understanding and learning about utilized materials and applications
Mus have adequate knowledge of power tools and shop safety
Qualification Profile:
A High School Diploma or GED is preferred
Must be qualified to repair and apply all types of roofing materials property and efficiently
Maintain valid Kansas Driver's License throughout entirety of employment
