Overview
The Larimer County Community Development Department is looking for a skilled and experienced individual to join our team as an Energy Code Specialist!
The Energy Code Specialist performs technical work reviewing building construction plans and conducting field inspections to ensure compliance with adopted energy codes and standards. The position provides expert guidance to staff, contractors, and the public; develops educational resources; supports energy code implementation and adoption efforts; and contributes to regional and state energy initiatives.
The typical schedule for this position is Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm. This is a 2 year limited term position. Expected to last until February 2028.
Responsibilities What you’ll be doing:
Reviews commercial, industrial, and residential construction plans and specifications to determine compliance with applicable energy code provisions.
Verifies energy code documentation, including COMcheck, REScheck, or simulation modeling reports.
Conducts field inspections during construction to verify energy code compliance, including insulation, air sealing, duct testing, lighting controls, and other performance measures.
Plans, coordinates, and delivers training sessions and workshops for internal staff, contractors, and design professionals.
Participates in regional and state energy code working groups, technical committees, and interagency partnerships.
Prepares reports, correspondence, and technical documentation; maintains appropriate records and files.
Participates in grant management and program reporting related to energy code implementation and education.
What we’re looking for:
Knowledge of energy conservation principles, building science, and energy code requirements
Ability to interpret and apply building and energy codes, standards, and regulations
Experience reviewing construction drawings, specifications, and energy modeling documentation
Strong data analysis and reporting skills, including the use of software for plan review and code compliance
Commitment to excellent customer service, continuous process improvement, and promoting energy-efficient building practices
Familiarity with adopted and pending energy codes, as well as referenced standards
Qualifications All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process.
• Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, energy systems, or a related field required.
• Three (3) years of experience in plan review, building inspection, energy code compliance, or related field required.
• Possession of the following certifications within 90 days of hire, required: IECC/HERS Compliance Specialist Designation from the International Code Council (ICC) (or equivalent)
• ICC Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner Certification (or equivalent)
• ICC Commercial Energy Inspector/Plan Examiner Certification (or equivalent)
• Possession of a valid Driver’s License by date of hire required.
