This opportunity entails serving as the Group Director for Strategic Services across North Carolina, leading a multi‑disciplinary team providing planning, design, construction, alternative delivery, and advisory services. This role is responsible for guiding the development and delivery of complex projects and programs while ensuring effective management of scope, budget, schedule, and quality.
The Group Director oversees financial performance across departments and service lines, ensuring alignment with group, office, and division goals. This leader collaborates closely with office and division leadership to drive strategic growth, apply the firm’s sales and planning approaches, and lead major pursuits and proposals across the state.
This position coordinates project priorities, staffing strategies, and resource assignments to ensure clients receive the right expertise at the right time. The Group Director is also responsible for developing high‑performing teams through technical coaching, mentoring, and fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Additionally, this role serves as a strategic advisor on complex programs and alternative delivery approaches, helping clients navigate project development from early planning through construction while leveraging HNTB’s national capabilities and best practices.
What You'll Do
Direct and supervise development and management of the operating budgets for the departments within the Group and coordinate with the office’s budget.
Oversee group activities, establish priorities and assign staff to projects; collaborate with other groups, offices and divisions on work‑sharing needs and opportunities.
Drive implementation of the firm’s strategic plan and HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits and markets with the Group and office, including development of strategic planning strategies.
Drive implementation of the firm’s contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities including scope, work plan and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the group.
Drive implementation of the firm’s project delivery (SDA) process including Work Planning, Monthly Project Reviews and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, to the client’s satisfaction.
Assist in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win‑to‑work activities.
Maintain client contacts to ensure client satisfaction. Lead and assist in sales and marketing efforts for department growth.
Assist in the development and execution of the office strategic plan; may participate in the Office Leadership Team (OLT).
Recruit, hire, develop and retain department staff within the group, including supporting Department Managers with staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession planning.
Manage assigned project management activities (scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and perform technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.
Lead a group including direct and indirect supervision of at least 25 but typically 35‑40+ employees.
Perform other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need
Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 12 years of practical experience including 4 years of supervisory experience.
What We Prefer
Master’s degree.
15 years practical experience.
6 years supervisory experience.
Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification.
Project Management Professional (PMP).
