Job Responsibilities

Assists in daily planning and coordination of the institutional operations including security, administration, and support for the institution, to include central office coordination.

Supervises security, custody, control, programs, welfare, and morale services for inmates.

Counsels with inmates as necessary.

Serves in capacity of Warden during his/her absence.

Supervises the implementation and execution of laws, policies, rules, and regulations, as well as operating procedures including OSHA regulations.

Enforces policies and procedures for a maximum-security institution.

Prepares (writes) various reports, special studies, and staff papers, including recommendations relating to proposed changes in policies, operating procedures, rules, regulations and laws.

Supervises maintenance of the institution's buildings, etc.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Warden.

Requirements

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A bachelor's degree and supervisory experience in a correctional environment or relevant military experience. Relevant experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year‑for‑year basis.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and ten (10) years' experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, which must include five (5) years of supervisory experience in a correctional environment.

A bachelor's degree may substitute for 4 years of overall experience.

Associate degree may substitute for 2 years of overall experience.

No substitutions for supervisory experience.

Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
