The City of North Miami is seeking an experienced planning professional to serve as Assistant Director of Community Planning and Development. This senior leadership position supports the Director in managing day-to-day departmental operations and advancing the City’s planning, zoning, sustainability, redevelopment, and business licensing functions.
The Assistant Director serves as the Department’s primary operational leader, ensuring consistent, high-quality service delivery and legally defensible implementation of adopted plans and regulations. While policy direction remains with the Director and City leadership, this position plays a critical role in translating policy into effective execution.
Essential Job Functions
Assist the Director in managing daily operations of the Community Planning and Development Department.
Oversee planning, zoning, sustainability, and business licensing functions in accordance with adopted regulations and procedures.
Supervise and mentor professional, technical, and administrative staff; promote collaboration and accountability.
Review complex development applications, zoning actions, and redevelopment proposals for compliance with adopted plans and codes.
Coordinate development review and licensing activities with Building, Public Works, Utilities, Code Compliance, and other City departments.
Represent the department at public meetings, hearings, workshops, and community outreach events.
Support updates to the Comprehensive Plan, land development regulations, and related ordinances.
Assist with budget preparation, performance tracking, and operational reporting. Serve as Acting Director in the Director's absence, as assigned.
Work Environment This position requires attendance at evening meetings and public hearings and involves coordination with a wide range of stakeholders. The City offers a collaborative work environment and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to community development outcomes.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Architecture, Geography, or a related field.
Seven (7) years of progressively responsible professional experience in planning or community development, including at least three (3) years of supervisory experience.
Experience working in a municipal planning environment. Valid Florida driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, or a related field. AICP certification.
Experience in a coastal or redevelopment-focused Florida municipality.
