Description
The music instructor is a full‑time, 10‑month salaried position responsible for a variety of educational instruction in the field of instrumental music. Responsibilities include developing and implementing the syllabus, achieving student learning outcomes, evaluating student performance, record‑keeping, and related activities. Related activities include advising, serving on committees, coordinating with area K‑12 schools and other colleges and universities, participating in recruiting and retention efforts, and engaging in professional activities and organizations.
Essential Duties Assist with athletic bands, conduct concert band, teach applied percussion, and direct instrumental chamber ensembles as needed. Instruct music appreciation courses as needed. Maintain band instrument and equipment inventory, including distribution and maintenance. Recruit prospective music majors and non‑majors to perform in student ensembles. Prepare, administer, and grade periodic tests, assignments, and program assessment data. Maintain records of student attendance as required by the Mississippi Community College Board. Report directly to the District Director of Fine Arts Instruction on all matters, except band and recruiting matters overseen by the Director of Bands.
Minimum Requirements
Master’s degree in music
Teaching experience in K‑12 schools (instrumental music)
Professional performance experience as percussionist
Experience designing and installing marching band field‑show sound systems
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills with students
Preferred
Terminal degree in music
Teaching experience in higher education (instrumental music)
Experience with classroom technology
Experience with outcome and program assessment
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Office 365, Canvas, and Outlook
Other Relevant Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge and support of college policies and procedures
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, faculty, students, and the public in the performance of the job
