We are seeking to hire a
Controls Specialist
to join our company in
Columbus,
Ohio on a major datacenter project
Job Purpose The Controls Specialist is responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, and supporting PLC-based control systems within mission-critical data center environments. This role requires strong working knowledge of Rockwell Automation platforms, particularly Studio 5000, with the ability to navigate existing control programs, isolate faults, and resolve system issues impacting power and cooling infrastructure. This is not a greenfield programming role—the ideal candidate understands how to move through ladder logic, identify interlocks, trace I/O, and support live operational systems in a high-availability environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Utilize Studio 5000 (Logix Designer) to navigate existing PLC programs and troubleshoot operational issues
Trace I/O points to identify sensor, device, or logic-related failures
Review ladder logic, function blocks, and interlocks to isolate root cause
Diagnose faults impacting critical infrastructure including chillers, cooling systems, switchgear, power distribution, backup generators, pumps, and HVAC equipment
System Support & Coordination:
Coordinate with operations and maintenance teams to implement corrective actions
Support system modifications and minor logic adjustments when required
Verify communications between PLCs, HMIs, BMS, and EPMS systems
Participate in incident response for uptime-critical systems
Documentation & Compliance:
Maintain system documentation and ensure changes follow MOC (Management of Change) procedures
Generate reports on system diagnostics, corrective actions, and system performanceWork closely with engineering and operations teams to ensure seamless coordination
Communicate technical findings clearly across multidisciplinary teams
Provide technical guidance and support as needed
Authority:
You have authority to stop the job if you feel there is an unsafe work practice which could result in a risk of injury, have an environmental impact or risk to equipment and other personnel.
Carry out your duties to meet Quality, Safety and Environmental requirements at all times.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related engineering discipline
Required Experience:
Minimum 3+ years of hands-on experience working with Allen-Bradley PLC systems
Demonstrated proficiency navigating and troubleshooting in Studio 5000
Strong understanding of ladder logic and industrial control architecture
Experience with EtherNet/IP and industrial communication protocols
Ability to analyze electrical schematics and P&IDs
Preferred Experience:
Background in data center, power generation, manufacturing, or mission-critical facilities
Familiarity with EPMS (Energy Power Management Systems) and BMS (Building Management Systems) integration
Understanding of HVAC and power distribution systems
Experience supporting live systems in high-availability environments
Technical Skills:
Studio 5000 and ladder logic proficiency
PLC troubleshooting and root cause analysis
I/O tracing and electrical schematic interpretation
Communication protocol knowledge (EtherNet/IP)
Systems-level thinking and multi-system coordination
Soft Skills:
Strong root cause analysis and problem-solving abilities
Comfortable working in live, uptime-sensitive environments
Detail-oriented with excellent attention to accuracy
Clear communicator across engineering and operations teams
