DSHS ESA – Public Benefits Specialist 1-3
We are hiring Public Benefits Specialists to join the Economic Services Administration (ESA) Community Service Division (CSD) call center. This role is hybrid: you will begin working in the office and transition to teleworking after training. Employees in Pierce County may receive an Orca Card for transportation needs.
Salary: Starting at $4,428 monthly (Step G). Salary will increase as you progress through training steps.

Public Benefits Specialist 2 : $4,428.00 Step D – $5,398.00 Step L (6 months)
Public Benefits Specialist 3 : $4,882.00 Step E – $5,812.00 Step L
Responsibilities
Process applications for initial and ongoing eligibility for Financial, Child Care, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Medicaid Assistance programs using internal software.
Conduct intensive interviews and independently determine eligibility.
Gather and review data, applications, and verification documents for each benefit program.
Process all applications and case actions in accordance with federal and state requirements based on household income and size.
Explain program requirements, application procedures, and verification needs to clients and answer questions regarding benefits or available services.
Qualifications
Four years of customer service experience involving public contact or staff support in financial eligibility determination (e.g., loan applications, medical insurance, rehabilitation claims, unemployment insurance claims). College education may substitute for experience (1 year for each college year).
OR at least one year of equivalent out-of-state experience conducting financial eligibility determination for public assistance programs (financial, medical, food benefits).
Thrives in a standardized work environment.
Proficient at learning and using various computer programs.
Effective communication skills with diverse populations, including calming others, assisting underserved populations, and handling confidential/unpleasant options.
Ability to work with complex regulations, analyze situations, and refrain from personal bias when determining eligibility.
Strong prioritization and multitasking skills in a busy office with frequent interruptions.
