Job Overview
This position requires work onsite 3 days per week. Health IT Training and Education is responsible for all aspects of the electronic health record, including Epic/Apex training for UCSF Health hospitals, practices, affiliates, and community partners. The Principal Trainer will collaborate with the Epic/Apex application teams, informatics, and clinical/business operations to provide training support to various end users, including front‑end users, revenue cycle staff, physicians, nurses, and other users.
The role focuses on educating and supporting practices with the Health Technology application, developing, documenting, training, implementing, and supporting best practice standard work to improve the use of Apex/Epic and third‑party systems. The Principal Trainer will provide excellent customer service to end users, track issues, and follow up as appropriate. The position requires work at multiple locations, including UCSF Health San Francisco, Benioff Children's Hospitals – Oakland and San Francisco, UCSF campus, and community affiliate partners.
Key Responsibilities
Collaborate with Epic/Apex application teams and informatics to provide training support to end users.
Develop and document training materials and standard work for Epic/Apex and integrated Health IT technologies.
Conduct role‑based training sessions for front‑end, revenue cycle, physician, and nursing staff.
Provide excellent customer service: track issues, troubleshoot, and follow up with users.
Manage multiple competing priorities while meeting program deadlines.
Apply clinical, procedural, and administrative workflow knowledge to understand user needs.
Achieve Epic certification within six months of hire and support a variety of Epic applications.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in health care information technology, computer science, or related area, or equivalent combination of experience/training.
3 to 5 years of relevant experience.
Epic certification completed within 12 months of start date.
Broad and/or in-depth knowledge of 1–2 focus areas in clinical applications specialty.
Strong problem‑resolution skills and ability to diagnose, test, and implement solutions promptly.
Strong interpersonal skills for training, supporting, and collaborating with users at all levels.
Detail‑oriented with proven organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
Strong written and verbal communication skills for conveying technical information clearly.
Strong analytical skills and knowledge in documentation and reporting.
Ability to work with senior staff and managers as a technical resource, providing advice on efficiency, cost‑effectiveness, and performance.
License / Certification
Epic certification completed within 12 months of start date.
Preferred Qualifications
Clinical license (RN, MA, or other tech license/certification).
