Position Overview
The University of Virginia’s Center for Public Safety and Justice (CPSJ) seeks a full-time faculty member to serve as Director of the National Criminal Justice Command College (NCJCC). Based in Charlottesville, Virginia, this individual will provide strategic and academic leadership for the Command College, teaching and overseeing the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of the program. The Director ensures that the program meets University of Virginia academic standards while leading the successful execution of a nationally recognized executive education experience for senior public safety leaders. The National Criminal Justice Command College convenes experienced leaders from law enforcement and public safety agencies across the United States to engage in intensive executive education focused on leadership, strategy, and organizational performance. The Director works closely with CPSJ leadership, practitioner faculty, and University partners to deliver a cohesive, high impact learning experience and to support the program’s continued growth and national reach.
Key Responsibilities Academic Responsibilities Responsible for program and course curriculum development and delivery for full and part-time public safety professionals learning in online, hybrid, and in-person environments.
Provide highly effective instruction, class management, and a vibrant, challenging and engaging academic experience for students.
Oversee program evaluation and student learning outcomes.
Serve as subject matter expert for Public Safety and remains current in the academic discipline for fluency and curriculum relevancy/updates.
The person hired for this position should be qualified to teach a variety of public safety topics.
Program Leadership & Delivery Lead the delivery of the National Criminal Justice Command College across in-person and hybrid sessions. Oversee program logistics including cohort schedules, session planning, and participant communications. Ensure program delivery reflects UVA academic standards and CPSJ program goals.
Program Development & Strategy
Contribute to the ongoing evolution of the Command College curriculum to reflect emerging challenges and best practices in public safety leadership.
Faculty Coordination
Recruit, engage, and manage a national network of practitioner faculty and guest instructors.
Provide faculty with program guidance, session expectations, and participant context.
Ensure continuity across sessions and alignment with overall program themes.
Academic Oversight Serve as faculty of record for the Command College. Maintain academic integrity of the program in collaboration with the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Oversee course documentation, grading processes, and academic records in coordination with SCPS.
Participant Experience Serve as the primary academic contact for program participants. Support capstone projects and applied learning activities. Guide a professional learning environment that encourages peer collaboration and executive reflection.
Institutional Coordination Work closely with CPSJ leadership to support program growth, innovation and national partnerships. Coordinate with SCPS administrative units including the Registrar, instructional design staff, and program operations teams. Represent CPSJ and the University of Virginia in national public safety leadership networks. Serve on SCPS and UVA faculty committees.
Qualifications Required Qualifications
Advanced degree (MS, MPA, JD, PhD, or equivalent).
Significant professional experience in public safety, criminal justice, or a closely related leadership field.
Experience coordinating or delivering executive education, leadership development programs, or professional training initiatives.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
Ability to manage complex programs involving multiple faculty and external partners.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with senior law enforcement or public safety leaders.
Experience coordinating university-based executive education programs.
Familiarity with evidence-based policing, leadership development frameworks, or public safety strategy.
