Overview
The National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II) is a DOE-funded scientific user facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Spectroscopy Program within the Physical Sciences & Research Operations Division provides advanced X-ray spectroscopy tools to study complex materials under real-world conditions, focusing on energy storage, catalysis, and other applications involving non-ambient and complex dynamic environments.
Position Description The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking a Scientific Associate to support the Spectroscopy Program. This program encompasses seven beamlines, including four NSLS-II beamlines (IOS, ISS, QAS, TES) and three NIST partner beamlines (BMM, SST-1, SST-2), offering comprehensive in situ spectroscopy capabilities spanning soft to hard x-rays. The program is also advancing cutting-edge techniques, including high-throughput and autonomous beamline operation and mechanism-driven materials optimization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct beamline technical development for the Spectroscopy Program
Provide operational support across program beamlines, such as beamline configuration
Manage assigned program laboratory spaces and user training
Scheduling and supervising others as necessary
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Bachelor's degree in a closely related field of basic or applied science
Proven experience using mechanical design software
Strong programming skills in Python and C++
Hands-on experience in lab instrumentation
Good verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment with scientists, engineers, technical staff, and users
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Master's degree

Demonstrated successful experience with automation, such as robotics
Demonstrated successful experience with AI/ML tools, e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch
Hands-on experience working with large-scale scientific instrumentation (e.g., synchrotron radiation beamlines)
Experience with EPICS IOC development
Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $76,100.00 - $100,000.00 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
