Job Duties and Responsibilities The Library Director leads a team of library professionals, overseeing two full‑service and two limited‑service locations. The Director manages recruitment, onboarding, performance evaluation, and professional growth, fostering a collaborative environment. They build relationships with campus leadership and stakeholders, champion the library’s role in academic success, and partner with faculty and student support teams to enhance learning outcomes. The Director delivers robust reference services in person and online, and drives innovative research support services and information resources.
Primary Job Duties And Responsibilities
Supervise, direct, delegate and evaluate the work of library staff
Oversee selection, acquisition, management, and function of print, media and electronic collections
Provide direction for the Information Literacy Instruction program, adhering to the ACRL Framework
Manage integrated library systems and integrate technology into operations
Develop and strengthen interlibrary cooperation with other NMSU System libraries, other libraries in the county, and academic institutions across New Mexico
Ensure reference services and circulation activities are available and effective during library hours
Ensure appropriate preservation of essential data and records and complete annual surveys as required (ACRL)
Conduct short‑ and long‑term planning; problem analysis; report preparation; interpersonal and organizational communication, oral and written
Supervise accurate processing, cataloguing and circulation of library resources
Prepare and recommend budget based on current and future needs
Work with staff to develop library goals, objectives, and methods for achieving the mission
Ensure adherence to applicable federal and state laws and college policies
Work with college staff to determine learning resource needs and collection development activities; participate or make assignments to appropriate college committees
Ensure required reports for federal and state agencies and internal needs are completed accurately and timely
Maintain state‑of‑the‑art knowledge in library science and operations; request appropriate professional development
Maintain communications and membership with professional associations
Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned
Required Knowledge Or Skills
Expertise in library operations, reference services, and academic support programming
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
Ability to build collaborative relationships across campus departments
Proven leadership experience in academic libraries or related educational settings
Demonstrated ability to manage complex operations and lead teams
Dedication to student success
Specialized Knowledge and Skills
Comprehensive familiarity with current trends in academic libraries, digital scholarship, and student learning support
Experience with strategic planning, assessment, and advocacy in higher education environments
Qualifications Required Education and Experience Master’s Degree in Library Science + 5 years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA certified program preferred
Minimum of five years of progressively more responsible experience in an academic library
Experience with an automated library system
Experience in Information Literacy Instruction
Ability to effectively supervise and direct both skilled professionals and paraprofessional staff
Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with college students, faculty, staff and administration
Excellent communication and listening skills
Working Conditions and Physical Effort Environment: Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
Physical Effort: No or very limited physical effort required.
Lifting Requirements: Requires handling of average‑weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking.
Risk: No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
