
Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications (Higher Education)

A public university on the Texas-Mexico border is hiring an Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications to lead its public relations, marketing, creative services, and media relations operations. This is a senior leadership position that reports to a Vice President and serves on the divisional leadership team, with direct oversight of brand management, crisis communications, strategic planning, and budgeting for the division.
The AVP will also represent the university internally and externally, produce executive-level communications including speeches and presentations, and step into additional leadership responsibilities in the Vice President's absence. This role requires someone who can balance high-level strategy with hands-on communications work, from directing brand standards to cultivating media relationships and guiding digital content initiatives.

What the Role Covers
Leading public relations, marketing, creative services, and media relations for the university
Directing brand management, crisis communication strategies, and media outreach
Developing and implementing the division's strategic plan, goals, and objectives
Managing the annual budget process and providing guidance to division units
Producing high-quality written and verbal communications, including executive-level speeches and presentations
Advising the Vice President on internal and external issues affecting division operations
Researching and identifying funding opportunities for division programs
Drafting and administering university policies, and monitoring relevant state and federal legislative issues
Cultivating relationships with media outlets, campus partners, and key stakeholders
Representing the university at internal and external events, and assuming additional leadership duties in the VP's absence
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Business, or a related field
10+ years of progressively responsible management experience
Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Experience with brand management, media relations, and crisis communications
On-campus presence required; occasional evening, weekend, and travel commitments
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in a related field
Experience with digital communications, web content strategy, and multimedia production
Data-informed approach to marketing and communications decisions
Experience with enrollment marketing and recruiting
Track record of building team development plans and facilitating cross-training
