
South Campus Residence Director

The Residence Director for the South Campus Community engages in day‑to‑day operational, administrative, and programmatic initiatives supporting Residential Living. The position serves approximately 2,400 students residing in University‑owned South Campus apartments and traditional residence halls while also supporting initiatives serving more than 12,000 students living in off‑campus neighborhoods, including commuter students.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement the community’s educational curriculum.
Mentor and coach up to nine Resident Advisors.
Handle crisis intervention and conflict mediation.
Participate in on‑call crisis response rotation; serve as first‑line responder for 14,000+ students.
Resolve violations of institutional policies and the Code of Student Conduct.
Plan and implement programs designed to support students transitioning to more independent living.
Coordinate outreach and engagement efforts that support student wellbeing and community expectations.
Maintain a visible presence within the South Campus community and work closely with students, staff, and partners to support engagement, conflict resolution, and preparation for successful off‑campus living.
Residential Education for South Campus Students
Actively connect with students in the Goldstein Student Center and South Campus apartment area.
Direct implementation of the South Campus apartment and Skyhall curriculum.
Participate in development and implementation of large‑scale initiatives focused on student transitions, life‑skill development for independent living, and support initiatives of the Off‑Campus Residential Living team.
Ensure programs meet the needs of specific populations such as international students, veterans, and athletes.
Provide support and referrals to students experiencing conflicts, concerns, and quality‑of‑life issues.
Supervision
Train, supervise, and evaluate 25–35 paraprofessional staff including Community Ambassadors, Main Desk Assistants, and Goldstein Student Center package room attendants.
Mentor/coach up to nine Resident Advisors, overseeing their training, oversight, and feedback processes.
Possibly train, supervise, and evaluate a graduate practicum student.
Provide indirect supervision of one administrative specialist and lead students engaged in voluntary capacities.
Hold regular South Campus Community Ambassador (SCCA) staff meetings and Resident Advisor (RA) staff meetings; conduct one‑on‑one meetings with SCCAs and RAs.
Manage staff feedback and performance concerns; engage in the performance partnership process.
Communications and Operations
Adhere to regular University business hours, maintaining presence in the Goldstein Student Center and after‑hours when required for programs, meetings, and training.
Develop and utilize processes for engaging and providing information to students living off‑campus, including through social media.
Build relationships with New Student Programs, Student Engagement, Center for International Services, Athletics, etc., to ensure timely communication to students residing on South Campus.
Strengthen relationships with the Department of Public Safety to promote student safety.
Work with Housing Office to learn of enrolled students who sign up to live in a South Campus apartment each year and develop targeted programmatic initiatives.
Ensure RAs understand procedures, policies, and practices essential to supporting students off‑campus.
Collaborate with Assistant Director and Director to assist in managing programming and operating budgets.
Assist with communications and operations on South Campus regarding opening, closing, health and safety inspections, trash, noise, etc.
Crisis Response
Serve in tier 1 on‑call rotation with other Residential Living staff.
When on‑call, act as first‑line responder for 14,000+ students and refer to relevant University resources (e.g., Barnes Center, Dean of Students Office, Hendricks Chapel, Housing Office).
Professional Development
Engage in professional development related to the position and EDAI (equity, diversity, accessibility, inclusion).
Adhere to ACUHO‑I, NASPA, and ACPA ethical standards.
Serve on University, Divisional, and Departmental Committees as requested.
Engage in self‑reflection and apply learning to professional and personal growth.
Provide summary of how learning is incorporated into practice.
Present workshops and training sessions to staff and students.
Participate in formal and informal evaluation processes; join Syracuse University, Student Experience division staff development, orientation, and onboarding sessions.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred.
Prior Residence Life/Student Affairs experience preferred.
Experience working with apartment‑style/independent living environments preferred.
Strong administrative skills and attention to detail.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong ability to handle multiple priorities and work across many constituencies.
Knowledge of student organization advising and conflict resolution skills.
