The Aquatics Director is responsible for overseeing all aquatics programs, staff, and operations at their assigned location. This role ensures compliance with YMCA standards and New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) regulations to provide safe, high-quality aquatic experiences for members and the community. The Aquatics Director leads program development, supervises aquatics staff, and promotes a culture of safety and engagement aligned with the YMCA's mission. General Work Schedule

40 hours per week. Variable work schedule which includes some evenings and weekends. Essential Functions

Aquatics Program Management

Develop, implement, and oversee a variety of aquatic programs, including swim lessons, lifeguard training, water fitness, and recreational swim. Ensure that all programs meet YMCA guidelines and NYS DOH regulations. Evaluate program effectiveness and make improvements based on member feedback and industry trends. Safety and Compliance

Maintain full compliance with YMCA aquatics safety standards and NYS DOH regulations, including water quality testing and facility inspections. Ensure that all staff certifications (e.g., lifeguarding, CPR/AED, First Aid) are current and meet regulatory requirements. Conduct regular safety drills, audits, and training sessions to ensure readiness and compliance. Staff Supervision and Development

Recruit, hire, train, and supervise aquatics staff, including lifeguards, swim instructors. Provide ongoing professional development opportunities and performance evaluations for staff. Schedule staff to ensure adequate coverage and high-quality service delivery. Facility Management

Oversee the maintenance and cleanliness of all aquatics facilities, including pools, locker rooms, and equipment. Work with maintenance staff to ensure that pool systems (e.g., filtration, chemical balance) are functioning properly and meet NYS DOH standards. Address and resolve facility issues promptly to minimize disruptions. Member and Community Engagement

Promote aquatics programs to members and the community to increase participation and engagement. Build relationships with members to ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment. Represent the YMCA at community events and establish partnerships to support aquatic initiatives. Administrative Duties

Prepare and manage the aquatics department budget, ensuring financial sustainability. Maintain accurate records, including attendance, certifications, incident reports, and maintenance logs. Prepare reports on program performance, safety compliance, and facility usage. Additional Responsibilities

Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education, or a related field preferred. Minimum of 3 years of experience in aquatics management or a related role. Current certifications in YMCA Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, and First Aid (or equivalent), and Oxygen Administration. Lifeguard Instructor Certification within 1 year of employment. Certification as a YMCA Swim Instructor Trainer or equivalent preferred. Pool Operator certification is required within 6 months of employment. Thorough knowledge of NYS DOH regulations for aquatic facilities. Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
