Associate Director, Generative AI Engineer

Location: Conshohocken, PA (Philadelphia area). Full‑time Director level. Overview

Madrigal Pharmaceuticals is a biopharmaceutical company focused on delivering novel therapeutics for metabolic dysfunction‑associated steatohepatitis (MASH). As Associate Director, Generative AI Engineer you will lead the integration of advanced AI technologies into our research and enterprise support functions, creating business‑facing experiences that highlight the value of large language models (LLMs) across HR, Finance, IT, Legal, and Compliance. Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategy

Develop and oversee the Generative AI roadmap in collaboration with senior leadership. Identify critical business problems solvable with Generative AI and define implementation strategies. Lead quantitative peer reviews and influence decision‑making. Manage a team of AI engineers, data scientists, and developers, providing mentorship and career development. Establish hiring, onboarding, and performance management processes for AI talent.

Solution Architecture and Design

Determine appropriate LLM complexity for use cases (e.g., Dolly vs. GPT‑4). Create technical standards and blueprints for Generative AI scenarios. Lead prompt engineering to optimize LLM performance. Rapidly prototype and test LLM scenarios to refine user experiences.

Advanced Analytics, Data Science, and Machine Learning

Deep experience in machine/deep learning, generative AI, and statistical modeling. Spearhead LLM fine‑tuning and RAG system development. Embed automated processes for predictive model validation, deployment, and implementation. Shape AI/ML stack components (Feature Stores, Model Stores, MLOps) to maximize LLM value. Contribute to internal discussions on emerging ML methodologies.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

Collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and researchers to deliver iterative features. Lead internal and external developers on the Generative AI roadmap. Engage subject‑matter experts across business areas. Educate technical and business leaders on Generative AI applications.

Continuous Learning and Innovation

Apply strong analytical and programming skills to cycle hypotheses through discovery phases. Communicate findings clearly and structurally. Stay updated on the latest LLM advancements and apply them to business scenarios.

Qualifications and Skills

Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Engineering, Statistics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Bioinformatics, or related quantitative field. 10+ years proficiency in Python, SQL, R, MATLAB, PyTorch, Keras, and Git. 8+ years experience in ML/deep learning, including hands‑on LLM fine‑tuning/training. 8+ years experience in data visualization and dashboard/web application development (Dash, Streamlit, Shiny). 8+ years experience in data manipulation, integration, complex queries, and data product creation. 8+ years implementing AI/ML systems on platforms such as Databricks or Dataiku. 2+ years designing modular multi‑agent systems powered by frontier LLMs (LangChain, AutoGen, CrewAI, etc.), secure agent‑to‑agent communication, and enterprise MCP tools. Strong understanding of cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP). Proven ability to build and lead cross‑functional teams, set clear priorities, and foster accountability. Proven experience in machine learning and software engineering best practices. Demonstrated ability to write and present papers, documentation, and presentations to explain research findings. Base salary range: $191,000 – $234,000 per year. All full‑time employees receive equity, reinforcing ownership culture.
