Principal Substation Engineer
b19 consulting is recruiting on behalf of a premier engineering firm in the power and utilities sector for the position of
Principal Substation Engineer . This newly established role represents a key opportunity for an accomplished engineer to take on technical leadership responsibilities within a growing physical substation design group.
The selected candidate will serve as a trusted technical expert, mentor, and strategic contributor—supporting a wide range of utility and transmission projects while helping to drive innovation and quality across all deliverables.
Base Pay Range $120,000.00/yr - $180,000.00/yr
Primary Responsibilities
Provide oversight and technical direction for substation engineering and design activities.
Lead multidisciplinary project teams, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, codes, and client specifications.
Mentor and develop early-career engineers through structured guidance and technical review.
Oversee complex substation design efforts, including equipment layout, grounding, and structural coordination.
Drive continuous improvement in project execution, introducing new technologies and design methodologies.
Support proposal development, technical evaluations, and project planning efforts as required.
Coordinate effectively with project management, construction, and procurement teams to align technical deliverables with project schedules.
Engage regularly with internal leadership and clients to provide updates, resolve technical challenges, and ensure client satisfaction.
Represent the firm in discussions with regulatory agencies, utilities, and professional organizations when needed.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of substation physical or protection & controls engineering experience
Licensure:
Professional Engineer (PE) license and Engineer-in-Training (EIT/FE) certification preferred but not required
Competencies:
Strong communication, coordination, and problem-solving abilities; demonstrated experience leading technical teams
Preferred:
Prior experience in utility or power consulting environments
