Overview
Provide leadership, direction, and oversight for Carl Sandburg College’s retail and auxiliary services, including campus food service operations and the Spirit Shop. The position supports the College’s mission by ensuring high-quality services that enhance the student experience, promote community engagement, and maintain fiscal responsibility and regulatory compliance. Food service operations
Plan, develop, and oversee all campus food service operations, including catering services, coffee shops, vending services, and franchise partnerships, in support of the College’s instructional and co-curricular activities. Administer, monitor, and evaluate vendor contracts to ensure service quality, fiscal accountability, and compliance with Carl Sandburg College policies, Illinois Department of Public Health regulations, and local health codes. Assess customer satisfaction and implement improvements to menu offerings, service delivery, and operational efficiency. Oversee inventory management, pricing strategies, and cost controls to ensure responsible stewardship of college resources. Spirit shop operations
Direct the day-to-day operation of the Carl Sandburg College Spirit Shop, including merchandise selection, inventory control, pricing, promotions, and branding. Ensure all merchandise aligns with Carl Sandburg College branding standards and supports student engagement and community pride. Establish and maintain effective vendor relationships to maximize sales and minimize waste or loss. Financial & administrative
Develop, administer, and monitor operating budgets for all retail and auxiliary operations in accordance with college fiscal procedures. Analyze financial performance, prepare reports, and recommend adjustments to support institutional financial goals. Contribute to auxiliary enterprise planning, revenue forecasting, and long-range planning initiatives led by the Business Office. Ensure compliance with Illinois procurement statutes, internal control standards, and Carl Sandburg College policies and procedures. Leadership
Hire, supervise, train, and evaluate retail operations staff in accordance with Sandburg’s human resources policies. Promote a customer-service-oriented environment that supports students, employees, and community members. Support staff professional development and performance improvement in alignment with institutional values. Strategic planning
Identify opportunities for expanded or new retail services, partnerships, and technology enhancements, including mobile ordering and cashless payment systems. Collaborate with academic and administrative departments to support College-sponsored events, programs, and initiatives through catering and merchandise services. Risk-management and loss-prevention
Maintain a working knowledge of the college’s emergency procedures and actively participate in the college risk-management program. Monitor conditions, events and circumstances that present risk to the college community. Intervene and/or report as specified in the college’s risk-management plan. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in business administration, hospitality management, retail management, or a related field. Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in retail or food service management. Demonstrated experience in budget management, vendor negotiations, contract oversight, Supervisory experience required. Working knowledge of point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management software, and financial reporting tools. Knowledge of Illinois health and food safety regulations and public-sector procurement practices. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, as required. Experience working in an educational environment is preferred. Valid driver’s license with the ability to travel occasionally for college business. Certified Food Protection Manager (CPFM) or ability to complete within 6 months of hire. Spanish or French language proficiency preferred. Basic dexterity skills (computer work, telephoning, and other office equipment). General physical effort required includes sitting, bending, reaching, and some lifting (20 lbs. or less) and the ability to place a work order for anything over that limit.
