Summary
The Senior Director of Shelter Medicine Training (Senior Director, SMT) works within the Shelter Medicine Services (SMS) team. The role includes overseeing shelter medicine residency training, developing educational resources, collaborating across programs, and serving in strategic positions in veterinary and animal welfare associations to promote positive welfare for animals and communities.
What You’ll Do The Senior Director, SMT reports to the Vice President, Shelter Medicine Services and Veterinary Training Programs. Key responsibilities include:
Maintain a robust residency training program for ASPCA Shelter Medicine Residents, ensuring compliance with ABVP residency requirements.
Provide supervision and mentorship for residents during clinical activities both internally at ASPCA and with external partners.
Deliver educational leadership by creating and presenting resources on shelter medicine and community animal health.
Lead shelter consultations and support the development of evidence‑based veterinary protocols with external clients.
Serve as direct supervisor for the Director of Clinical Training and provide indirect oversight of residents.
Support professional development through coaching, performance evaluations, and positive people‑centric management.
Where and When You’ll Work This position requires regular (35‑50%) commuting to APSCA NYC locations, Animal Care Centers of NYC, and other city sites. Travel (~15%) outside of NYC is required. Remote work from a home office will balance on‑site clinical time. Hours are generally Monday through Friday with rotating availability for weekend and holiday consultations.
What You’ll Get Compensation The target hiring range for this role is $198,000 – $210,000 annually. This range is for new hires and may be increased based on performance. All details are governed by internal equity, market demands, and business needs.

Responsibilities
Maintain a comprehensive residency program, staying updated on ABVP requirements and ensuring resident progression.
Ensure appropriate supervision and clinical mentorship for residents in internal and external settings.
Provide feedback to resident knowledge, clinical proficiency, communication skills, and overall progress.
Support resident research projects and manuscript preparation in partnership with the research team.
Iconically model a commitment to animals’ health and the elevation of shelter medicine within the organization.
Develop efficient, cost‑effective protocols for high‑quality veterinary care aligned with shelter medicine principles.
Build capacity in veterinarians and staff to apply shelter medicine across varied situations.
Coach and troubleshoot implementation of shelter medicine practices such as daily rounds and pathway planning.
Serve as a champion in change management and proactively identify improvements in people, policies, and protocols.
Provide direct clinical care alongside trainees and support the management of individual animals and populations when appropriate.
Lead remote and on‑site shelter consultations, providing expertise and supporting implementation of shelter programs.
Produce reports, materials, and presentations to assist organizations in applying new recommendations.
Qualifications
Expert knowledge and experience in shelter medicine and companion animal population health.
Current veterinary license in New York State or ability to obtain within 90 days.

Education and Work Experience
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent accredited degree.
Board certification in Shelter Medicine Practice preferred; if not currently certified, active work toward certification (within two years).
Seven years of veterinary experience.
Five years of shelter medicine experience, including direct work with shelters on individual and population levels.
Prior experience training veterinary students or veterinarians preferred.
Experience in applied clinical research and epidemiological study design preferred.
