
Assistant Director - Group-X and Wellness Education

Job Summary
The Michigan Recreation Department at the University of Michigan is dedicated to fostering a healthy lifestyle through engagement, leadership, and active participation. The department manages several programs, four indoor facilities, three outdoor field complexes, and an adventure-based education center. It plays a vital role in campus life with a team of 40+ full-time staff members and 650+ student employees. Established in 1913, it is recognized as one of the first collegiate recreation programs. Responsibilities
Program Oversight (50%) Provide strategic leadership for Michigan Recreation’s group fitness programming across three recreation facilities, ensuring inclusive and engaging services. Lead curriculum development and updates for instructor mentorship programs. Recruit and evaluate temporary staff associated with fitness and wellness programs. Stay current with anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics through continuing education. Develop and revise administrative policies and procedures for group exercise instructors and well‑being staff handbooks. Set learning outcomes and conduct comprehensive program assessments to inform development and implementation. Drive membership sales through new and innovative fitness and wellness offerings. Develop programs that align with departmental mission and financial goals, continually assessing associated risks. Partner with Student Life units, University departments, and community outreach programs to support wellness initiatives. Wellness Education (15%) Design and implement a comprehensive curriculum for wellness education programs. Assist in developing new initiatives and special events to meet campus well‑being needs. Collaborate with campus partners to implement a holistic approach to health and wellness. Create and manage sustainable wellness programs. Staff Oversight (15%) Manage payroll for all staff within the scope of supervision. Supervise, direct, coach, and mentor direct reports; ensure positive departmental representation and provide regular feedback. Fiscal Oversight (10%) Prepare, oversee, forecast, and manage operating budgets; approve expenditures of direct reports. Ensure compliance with Department, Division, and University policies. Collaborate with departmental financial staff and the Student Life Business Office to meet revenue goals. Leadership (10%) Provide departmental leadership; develop and enforce policies; support student development. Serve on committees or work teams to support the Department, Division, and University. Lead development of fitness certification programs and ongoing education for staff. Financial/Budgetary Responsibility This position oversees the development and administration of the annual budgets for Group‑X Program and Wellness programming. Total annual budget responsibility is estimated at $175,000. Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Health, Wellness, Recreation, or a related field. Minimum of 4 years of professional experience operating fitness or wellness programs. Minimum of 4 years of experience as a group exercise instructor or personal trainer. Minimum of 3 years of experience supervising professional, temporary, or voluntary staff. Current group exercise instruction certifications (ACE, ACSM, or similar). Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED, or ability to obtain within six months of hire. Benefits
