Summary Of The Role The Senior Natural Gas Trader is responsible for managing physical natural gas trading positions across Texas markets, optimizing daily asset and portfolio exposures, and maximizing commercial value within defined risk parameters. This role requires deep market expertise, strong commercial intuition, and the ability to make high‑velocity decisions in dynamic market conditions. The trader will actively manage supply, transportation, storage, and customer positions while cultivating strategic relationships with counterparties, pipelines, producers, and market participants.
Key Responsibilities
Trade physical natural gas in daily and next‑day markets, optimizing positions across multiple hubs and pipelines
Execute supply purchases, sales, and transport/storage deals to support portfolio optimization
Manage balancing requirements, nominations, and real‑time operational constraints
Identify and capture market dislocations, optionality, and locational arbitrage opportunities
Monitor pipeline notices, outages, and constraints to adjust positions accordingly
Optimize company‑owned capacity, storage assets, and structured positions
Manage exposure within defined risk limits, ensuring compliance with corporate trading policies
Work closely with schedulers to ensure accurate and timely nominations and flow strategies
Coordinate with risk, legal, and credit teams to support trade execution and counterparty allocations
Maintain a strong understanding of regional supply/demand fundamentals, weather impacts, pipeline dynamics, and competitive behaviors
Provide market insights to internal stakeholders, including analytics, strategy, and commercial leadership
Contribute to short‑term forecasting and trading strategy development
Evaluate new market opportunities, optionality structures, and portfolio enhancements
Develop and maintain strong relationships with producers, marketers, utilities, industrial customers, and pipeline representatives
Negotiate commercial terms for spot and short‑term physical transactions
Ensure all trades comply with internal risk frameworks, regulatory guidelines, and reporting requirements
Maintain accurate trade capture and support timely resolution of trade discrepancies
Collaborate with risk control and audit teams during periodic reviews
7–10+ years of experience in physical natural gas trading, preferably in cash/daily markets
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Energy, Engineering, or related field; advanced degree a plus preferred
Deep knowledge of U.S. pipeline systems, scheduling processes, balancing rules, and regional market structures
Demonstrated track record of P&L generation and commercial value creation
Strong analytical skills, including comfort with real‑time decision making under uncertainty
Excellent communication and negotiation abilities
High proficiency with trading systems (e.g., Endur, Allegro, Trayport) and market data tools
Experience trading across multiple regions (Gulf Coast and Texas) preferred
Familiarity with structured products, asset‑backed trading, and storage optimization preferred
Understanding of ERCOT adjacent gas dynamics preferred
Work Environment This position operates in a professional office environment with occasional work within or outside of a complex construction environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers/fax, filing cabinets, etc. This is primarily a sedentary role; however, the incumbent must be able to stand and/or sit continuously to perform all essential job functions for a full shift.
