Broadcast Maintenance Engineer

Overview Description The Broadcast Engineer will assist with daily technical support, preventative maintenance, and basic first-level troubleshooting as necessary to ensure smooth operation of New York Public Radio’s complex and fast-paced live broadcast environment, while dividing their time between maintenance shop projects and Master Control coverage. The Broadcast Engineer must possess a mix of experience, creativity, and a thirst for exploration as NYPR continuously pushes the boundaries of new technologies.

Responsibilities

Provide basic, first-level technical assistance for all control room, studio, and production systems, broadcast consoles, phone systems, codecs, and digital/analog audio routing systems

Assist Maintenance Engineering with engineering tasks, projects and troubleshooting as needed

Provide Master Control shift coverage and VR (Vacation Relief) as required

Ability to work weekday/weekend 1st or 2nd shift hours on site

Perform checklist driven show support and preparation as needed

Maintain all technical areas in an organized and safe condition

Follows NYPR standard operating procedures and demonstrates best engineering practices

Support special engineering projects as assigned

Skills, Knowledge And Abilities

Associate degree or equivalent broadcast engineering experience required (three or more years)

Demonstrated knowledge of basic broadcast operations, equipment, facilities, and systems

Experience as an FM or AM Control Point Operator

Experience with IP-based broadcast equipment, audio routers, consoles, signal processing, and playback systems

Demonstrated problem solving and technical troubleshooting skills to the system level

Familiar with RF/IF/Audio/UTP cable and connector fabrication and termination methods

Familiar with Windows and Linux based operating systems

Familiar with RF/IF transmission systems, STL, and receive-only (RO) satellite distribution

Ability to prioritize, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues in an unsupervised manner

Ability to think creatively and be an active contributor in a diverse team environment

SBE certification desirable

MS Office and/or AutoCAD Proficient

Strong problem solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work calmly under pressure

Additional Information

This is a full-time non-exempt role with a salary of $70,720 annually (plus a full benefits package). Salary offered within this range is determined by skills, experience and organizational pay equity. New York Public Radio also offers comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, along with vacation time, personal days, sick time and parental leave.

This role is based in New York City (or the immediate metro area). This individual is expected to work 1st or 2nd shift onsite at WNYC’s Manhattan headquarters weekdays with the ability to cover weekends and holidays as needed.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between New York Public Radio and SAG-AFTRA.
