
Assistant Director of Parks

Position Overview
The Town of Addison is recruiting for its next Assistant Director of Parks. Under general supervision of the Director of Parks and Recreation, the Assistant Director assists with the management and administrative activities of policies related to planning, operation, and administration of parks. The role includes long‑range planning, policy, budget, and park project planning.
Responsibilities
Provides direction and supervision of park staff and projects to accomplish the goal of a vibrant and active community through the administration of projects and park planning efforts.
Assists in the formulation of parks policies and implements decisions as deemed essential by the Department Director.
Oversees the preparation and administration of the department’s annual park projects including grant writing, development of scope of services, negotiation of professional service agreements, review of plans, bidding, preparation of Council agenda items, project management, and construction observation.
Provides public information on park and recreation programs through the town’s communication channels, makes presentations, and facilitates gathering public input.
Manages landscaping and beautification efforts via Asset Management and Parkland Dedication Programs.
Oversight of design recommendations for redeveloping and maintaining existing landscape areas using native, adapted, drought‑tolerant materials.
Assists in the completion of long‑range park plans such as the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan and City‑Wide Trails Master Plan.
Serves as a member of the Development Review Committee, administers town ordinances, and serves as the lead and primary point of contact for park planning and design to ensure alignment with long‑range goals.
Oversees reviews of private development plans for compliance with town landscape ordinances, documents compliance/non‑compliance, and informs appropriate staff, consultants, and developers.
Evaluates park and recreation facilities, public and private landscapes, and maintenance operations; recommends improvements.
Assists in the preparation of the annual budget and prepares periodic reports of departmental operations.
Conducts research, compiles data for computer entry, and prepares graphics and spreadsheets.
Meet with subordinates to assign projects, discuss standard operating issues, and follow up to resolve problems.
Serves as department leader in the absence of the Director; provides support to the Director as required.
May be asked to perform additional duties directly or indirectly related to normal job functions, including certain town events.
Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Parks & Recreation Administration or related field; AND
Five (5) years of public administration or management experience AND two (2) years of supervisory experience; OR
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
State of Texas Registered Landscape Architect designation and/or Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) is preferred.
Conditions of Employment
Safe driving record and valid Texas driver’s license.
Clear criminal background check and pre‑employment drug screen.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
Knowledge of contract negotiation and management methods and techniques.
Knowledge of landscape design, architecture, management methods and practices.
Knowledge of tree preservation and water conservation methods, practices, and procedures.
Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
Skill in preparing clear and concise reports and other documents.
Skill in analyzing environmental impacts.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in a standard office environment. Work is generally performed indoors in an air‑conditioned facility but may also include limited exposure to outside weather conditions. This is an exempt position; the incumbent is expected to work whatever hours are necessary to complete responsibilities.
