TAHC – Region Director (Veterinarian IV) – Amarillo, Sulphur Springs
Position Overview The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) seeks a Region Director (Veterinarian IV) to lead animal health programs for the Amarillo and Sulphur Springs region. The role oversees regional office operations, veterinary activities, disease control, consultative services, and emergency response.
Responsibilities
Provide regional leadership and supervise agency functions.
Administer all animal health programs, ensuring materials are updated and correctly applied.
Contact herd/flock owners within prescribed times, determine testing plans, and obtain owner agreement.
Coordinate herd/flock work and follow‑up tasks with Regional Inspectors.
Work with the assigned Regional epidemiologist to ensure timely completion and accuracy of investigations, reports, test charts, and lab reports.
Continuously re‑evaluate affected herds/flocks to confirm appropriate disease management practices.
Provide procedural assistance, training, and oversight for inspectors collecting and submitting test samples.
Participate in agency emergency preparedness and response activities; maintain current knowledge of agency roles and responsibilities.
Ensure compliance with regulations for livestock market, slaughter plant, livestock inspections, and related areas.
Complete testing phases, market cattle identifications, investigations, and tracing in a timely manner.
Prepare and deliver educational presentations to industry, veterinary, community groups, agency staff, and associates.
Meet with producers, market owners, and stakeholders to address unresolved concerns.
Oversee risk management programs, including antigen controls and medical waste disposal.
Serve as a subject‑matter expert for other TAHC departments to develop and update rules and communication materials.
Perform Foreign Animal Disease (FAD) response activities.
Collaborate with other Region Directors/Veterinarians, Deputy Executive Director, and Director of Field Operations to distribute caseloads.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution.
License to practice veterinary medicine in Texas (or ability to qualify within 1‑3 months).
USDA Veterinary Accreditation, Level II in Texas (or ability to qualify within 1‑3 months).
Must become a certified Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician (FADD) within the first year of employment.
Preferred: experience with large animals and wildlife.
Knowledge of veterinary medicine principles, regulations, and livestock industries in Texas.
Proficiency with computers and effective oral & written communication.
Ability to plan, implement and direct all aspects of animal health programs.
Ability to supervise, train, and coach others.
Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.
Strong organizational, leadership, and planning skills.
Ability to travel and adjust work hours to meet workload priorities.
Ability to promote disease control programs and advise on control methods and procedures.
Physical Requirements
Ability to handle and inspect livestock, including exotic species and harvested deer; lift up to 50 pounds.
Other Requirements
Valid Texas driver’s license with a safe driving record.
Background check and satisfactory moving violation record from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Reliable transportation; mileage reimbursed at current allowance rate.
Proof of eligibility to work in the United States via E‑Verify.
For males aged 18‑25, provide proof of Selective Service registration or exemption upon hire.
Potential for rotating temporary duty assignments away from headquarters for up to two weeks at a time; may involve working in adverse conditions and irregular hours.
