Description
Head Coach responsible for overseeing the entire sports program, providing instruction, coaching, and support to student‑athletes and staff, ensuring high standards of athletic performance and character development.
Reports To The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.
Supervises The head coach oversees high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches, coordinating with the athletic director and respective principals.
Duties and Responsibilities
Organize and supervise the total sports program.
Maintain knowledge of the athletic policies approved by the Culver Community Schools Corporation Schools' Board of Education and implement them across the program.
Understand and apply state and league regulations consistently and interpret them to staff.
Follow proper administrative channels for requests and grievances; attend required meetings.
Assist the athletic director with scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
Prepare facility usage schedules and coordinate with maintenance and other staff.
Document state and system requirements such as physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
Ensure the safe use and protection of equipment and maintain inventory.
Recommend policy, method, or procedural changes to the athletic director.
Provide staff training and professional development through clinics and staff meetings.
Delegate duties, supervise implementation, evaluate staff effectiveness, and analyze performance at season's end.
Staff Responsibilities
Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff, and conduct conferences, clinics, and staff meetings.
Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth and clinic attendance.
Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and assess staff effectiveness at season's end.
Maintain discipline, address grievances, and promote morale and cooperation.
Perform additional duties assigned by the athletic director or principal.
Student Responsibilities
Serve as a mentor to each athlete, promoting character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
Monitor athletes’ grades and conduct, providing guidance and support.
Ensure constant presence at all practices, games, and travel.
Teach athletes training rules and any sport‑specific regulations.
Initiate injury and medical protocols, complete paperwork for disabling injuries, and submit within 24 hours.
Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians and enforce discipline procedures.
Assist athletes in college or advanced educational options.
Finance and Equipment
Participate in budgeting with the athletic director, establishing season requirements and ensuring budget appropriations.
Recommend equipment guidelines regarding type, style, color, and technical specifications.
Be accountable for all equipment, collect costs for lost items, and manage issuing, storing, reconditioning, and inventory.
Mark and identify equipment, monitor equipment rooms, and authorize personnel for issuance.
Maintain cleanliness of locker rooms and specific sport equipment and secure facilities when custodians are not present.
Public Relations
Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.
Promote the sport within the school and externally through recruitment, media, and community programs.
Ensure effective oral or written releases to local media.
Maintain good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
Present information to media about schedules, tournaments, and results.
Qualifications
Ability to organize and supervise the total sports program.
Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned major sport.
Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport.
Continual examination of new theories and procedures relevant to the field.
Serve as a role model for student‑athletes through instruction and action.
