Job Description The Expatriate Services Senior Associate is responsible for reviewing inbound and outbound international assignee US income tax returns, some preparation of more advanced returns, tax equalizations, completing assignment cost projections, and compensation reviews and planning. The role includes gathering required client information to prepare tax filings, participating in tax planning and recognizing potential risks, communicating with assignees and company administrators, and conducting tax research.

Job Duties

Research

Identify situations requiring research, provide an outline of the issue(s), and select appropriate research sources.

Analyze researched facts and sources before composing a detailed report of findings.

Tax Compliance

Ensure client compliance with applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.

Obtain required client information for tax filings.

Conduct detailed review of basic returns, prepare review notes, and identify potential tax issues.

Plan the tax process and procedures.

Tax Consulting

Develop, recommend, and implement standard tax methods to maximize client benefits.

Document significant tax positions, issues, findings and deliverables per firm policies.

Assist in developing client consulting project plans and support completion of those projects.

Tax Controversy

Represent clients before tax authorities on contested issues, with guidance from senior STS professionals.

Tax Specialization

Apply expatriate tax compliance, planning, and global implications to technical and practical client issues.

Be versed in transfer year residency issues, elections, and foreign earned income exclusion qualifications.

Identify and apply income tax treaties and totalization agreements.

Provide basic advice on US payroll reporting for expatriate compensation and housing deductions.

Administer pre-assignment and post-arrival consultations through data-gathering interviews.

Tax Related Software

Utilize GoSystems, tax research databases, and other tax-related software.

Strategy Development

Assist in preparing studies of tax implications to identify alternative courses of action for clients.

Develop new or improved ideas to advance the firm or its personnel.

Partner with other tax disciplines to recommend additional services or benefits to meet client needs.

Perform other duties as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Provide guidance and mentoring to associates and interns on the team.

Education Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, International Business, Human Resource Management, International Human Resource Manager, or other related field is required.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, International Business, Human Resource Management, International Human Resource Management, or related field (required).

Advanced degree in Accounting or Tax (preferred).

Experience

Two to three years of experience in individual income tax preparation; expatriate tax experience preferred.

Prior experience in a customer/client service environment (preferred).

Prior study abroad or international work experience (preferred).

License/Certification

Enrolled Agent or CPA (preferred).

Software

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Proficient in Adobe Reader and Writer.

Language

Fluency in foreign languages highly desired.

Excellent computer skills and aptitude to learn new software applications.

Knowledge of appropriate information required in the tax return filing process.

Knowledge and familiarity with commonly utilized individual income tax forms.

Capability to delegate work assignments as needed.

Capacity to build and maintain strong client relationships.

Salary Individual salaries are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

National Range: $73,500 - $131,250

Maryland Range: $73,500 - $131,250

NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $73,500 - $131,250

Washington DC Range: $73,500 - $131,250
