Status Full-Time (Exempt – Administrative)/At-Will
Purpose Under the direction of the Purchasing Manager, the Purchasing Agent is responsible for sourcing and acquiring goods and services for a company by evaluating suppliers, negotiating contracts, and ensuring the best price and quality for required products, often by reviewing purchase requisitions, soliciting bids, and placing orders while adhering to company policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
Purchases goods and services according to Company policies and procedures
Evaluates vendors based on price, reliability, capability, and previous transaction history
Works with vendors to negotiate volume and cash transaction discounts, and other available discounts
Ensures that purchasing documents are complete and accurate and include appropriate and reasonable terms and conditions
Maintains pricing histories and other vendor records
Performs other related duties as assigned
Tracks supplier performance and implement improvement plans
Maintains relationships with suppliers while continually scouting for additional vendors
Seeks ways to improve and enhance the quality of products purchased and the timeliness of deliveries
Communicates regularly with management regarding the efficient flow of goods and services affecting production
Develops risk management procedures to mitigate losses in the event of product shortages
All other duties as assigned by Management
Required Skills
Ability to negotiate in a cost-transparent environment
Ability to establish, develop, and improve vendor partnerships
Ability to be self‑motivated and able to work both independently and within a team environment
Ability to utilize Microsoft Office Suite applications and other computer programs for the purpose of communications, data entry, tracking, and reporting
Ability to travel to company warehouses, laydown yards, projects, and vendor locations
Ability to identify supply solutions for the Company through an unconventional sourcing approach
Possess aptitude for problem‑solving; ability to determine solutions for the Company and customers through an unconventional sourcing approach
Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
Physical Requirements
Ability to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. PPE includes but is not limited to: hard hat, task specific safety glasses, life vest, respirators, task specific hearing protection, task specific safety shoes (steel toe or metatarsal), and /or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and may change based on the location in which the work is being completed.
Ability to walk, step, climb, and otherwise move from one location on the job site to another.
Ability to be physically seated for long periods of time in a standard issue desk chair.
Ability to work more than 40 hours in any given week including weekend assignments when required.
Ability to visually tolerate prolonged exposure to computer screens, mobile device (phones, tablets, etc.) screens.
Ability to read documents and materials in hard and soft copy form (either naturally or with corrective lenses).
Ability to walk, step, climb stairs to access or otherwise move from one location to another which normally involves walking within and around locations and when required to climb and descend stairs to access areas as required.
Ability to visually see well (either naturally or with corrective lenses).
Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, squat, climb, and sit for long periods of time.
Ability to lift and carry up to and including 50 lb. objects as required.
Ability to tolerate working outdoors in all‑weather conditions as required.
Experience 7+ years of progressive experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, and supply chain management.
Education Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline (i.e., Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, etc.); however, candidates with professional experience will be considered if experience demonstrates the ability to perform the tasks listed in the position’s job responsibilities section.
Travel Travel up to 15% annually is required.
