Unit Director Operating Room
UPMC Passavant is seeking an experienced Unit Director to lead our Operating Room (OR). This role requires prior Operating Room leadership and hands-on OR experience and provides 24/7 accountability for clinical excellence, staff engagement, and operational performance.
Position Overview
The Unit Director is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and performance of the Operating Room. This includes clinical quality, patient outcomes, staff development, fiscal responsibility, and day-to-day operations. The Director partners closely with physicians, anesthesia, and perioperative leaders to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical care.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and oversight for all clinical, operational, and administrative functions of the Operating Room
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia, and medical staff to monitor patient outcomes, establish quality priorities, and implement patient safety initiatives
- Use OR-specific quality metrics, dashboards, and evidence-based practice to drive continuous improvement
- Lead staffing, hiring, onboarding, performance management, and staff engagement for OR team members
- Support shared governance through a unit-based professional practice council and incorporate staff feedback into practice and workflow improvements
- Develop staff through coaching, mentoring, specialty certification support, and succession planning
- Oversee department budgeting, resource utilization, and staffing models to support patient volume and surgical demand
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards related to perioperative services
- Promote a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative OR culture that supports safety, teamwork, and professional growth
- Lead and develop direct-report leaders, ensuring strong communication, accountability, and leadership skill development
Minimum of 4 years of progressive leadership experience required with relevant clinical experience preferred. Previous perioperative nursing experience preferred. Analytical ability necessary to evaluate staff, address and improve clinical issues and devise solutions to complex problems. Leadership ability to develop staff, establish and maintain standards of performance within a national context for professional nursing practice and comply with administrative requirements. Superior interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to effectively create relationships to support a healing environment with patients, families, staff, physicians and hospital personnel including senior management in both written and verbal communication.
BS/BSN required at time of hire and master's degree/MSN required. If BS degree not in nursing, a master's or higher degree in Nursing is required. If Masters degree not in nursing, a BSN is required. If the master's degree/MSN is not present at time of hire, must be enrolled in a Masters or MSN program within one year of hire/transfer date and completed within three years of enrollment. Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in practicing state.
