The Lead Gardener will provide the Crew Leader with support in supervising and directing landscape maintenance activities and procedures at assigned job sites. They will suggest improvements in production, cost efficiencies and safety. Primary responsibilities include installing, renovating and maintaining grounds and landscaped areas in accordance with established schedules, specifications and procedures.
The Lead Gardener will assist the Crew Leader on a daily basis by ensuring fulfillment of company vision, goals and strategies, and will help ensure compliance with all company policies, safety standards, procedures and fleet programs.
Primary Responsibilities
Assist the landscape maintenance crew in pruning, fertilizing, weeding, watering, spraying, mowing and raking.
Assist in planting and cultivating landscaped grounds, including plants, flowers, shrubs and trees.
Remove weeds, trash and debris from landscapes and hardscaped areas.
Observe all company safety procedures.
Ensure crew members adhere to safety policies and training during duties, including use of required safety equipment.
Secure tools, equipment, supplies and materials.
Maintain a neat and organized work area, including truck bed, cab, locker and assigned field area.
Communicate any special instructions or job schedules to the Crew Leader or Supervisor.
Communicate personnel issues to the Crew Leader.
Recommend changes in methods, schedules and procedures for the job.
Assist the Crew Leader in preparing equipment, tools and supplies necessary for work and confirm progression to ensure efficient completion.
Operate equipment safely, making accident prevention part of daily conduct.
Assist the Crew Leader in training crew members on all aspects of daily work.
Assist the Crew Leader in ensuring proper workflow and timely completion of documentation and paperwork.
Assist the Crew Leader in operating and maintaining the company vehicle in accordance with fleet safety and vehicle management policy.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Operate and utilize power equipment and specialized tools safely and efficiently.
Basic working knowledge of ornamental horticulture.
Basic knowledge of ornamental landscape pests, diseases and proper chemical application.
Basic understanding of irrigation systems and controllers.
Administrative, organizational and time‑management skills.
Logical thinking and ability to define problems and initiate appropriate action.
Follow written or verbal instructions.
Use an electronic handheld device to record associate time worked.
Interact effectively with associates, clients, vendors and other stakeholders.
Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred, but not required.
Required License/Certification
Valid California Driver’s License.
Acceptable driving record.
Education / Experience
Minimum 2 years experience in commercial landscape maintenance, with emphasis on crew management, routing, sequencing and safe equipment use.
Physical Requirements
Constant standing, sitting, walking, stooping, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, climbing, frequent pushing or pulling, getting in and out of vehicle cabs and beds; ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Wear all personal protective equipment as required.
Working Conditions Outdoor work with exposure to hot and cold temperatures, sudden temperature changes, varying noise levels, slippery surfaces, rain, dust/dirt, fumes, wind, uneven ground and landscaped slopes.
Equipment / Machinery Mowers of varying sizes, gas‑powered hedge trimmers, weed whips, backpack blowers, and hand tools such as loppers, shears, pruners, hand saw, bow rake, leaf rake, pole pruner, pole saw, push broom and shovels.
