Position Title "Temporary Position" - Assistant Director of Campus Recreation (Club Sports)

Department Campus Recreation

Position Summary The primary purpose of this position is to develop, plan, recruit, implement, supervise, and evaluate a comprehensive competitive club sport program. The club sports program comprises the competitive and recreational club sports. The incumbent will develop and expand current program offerings; travel and recruit for new members, develop and manage budgets; and implement, supervise, review and administer the club sport activities and operations. The incumbent will also design, develop, and implement a comprehensive training and leadership development program for club sport officers and coaches, to include training topics such as safety, travel, fundraising, insurance and waivers, use of university name and trademarks/logos, budgeting, officer development, hosting competitions, space allocation and reservations. In addition, the incumbent will outreach to Admissions, Student Affairs, Athletics, student organizations and other campus departments to assess student interests, student learning outcomes, and increase participation, retention, and recruitment for UNC Asheville students.

Responsibilities and Duties Clubs Sports Management (50%)

Oversee all aspects of the UNC Asheville Club Sports Program.

Develop, design, and implement a comprehensive training and leadership development program for club sport officers, to include updating the current club sport handbook and providing training on topics such as safety, travel, fundraising, insurance and waivers, use of university name and trademarks/logos, budgeting, officer development, hosting competitions, space allocation and reservations, and other topics related to sport club programs.

Develop an outreach plan to provide information sessions and encourage the formation of new club sports.

Oversee all club sport budgets, including allocations, fundraising and expenditures.

Review and approve all club sport activities such as travel, memberships, participation with National Governing Bodies, club sport uniforms, events, official volunteers, coaches, and payments according to department and university protocols.

Oversee all club sport equipment acquisition and maintenance, as well as reservation of spaces.

Some travel may be required for marketing and support at club sport competitions.

Club Sport Recruitment (25%)

Identify opportunities to recruit new sports and members by traveling and representing UNC Asheville. Work with Admissions to navigate best practices and recruitment cycles.

Identify talent in members and coaches to grow club sports at UNC Asheville.

Identify conferences and camps hosted each summer at UNC Asheville for potential recruitment.

Some travel for recruitment to sporting events and with Admissions may be required.

Administration/Supervision (25%)

Develop long term strategic plans for program areas of responsibility. Plans should align with department and university goals and include core values, directions and assessment.

Conduct regular assessments of program, department, and divisional goals.

Coordinate and order supplies, equipment, travel, etc. as needed according to university procurement processes and procedures.

Plan, develop, implement, and assist with Campus Recreation special events, informal recreation, daily operations, and facility functions in collaboration with the other department members.

Support Campus Recreation and the Division of Student Affairs in student development and University events. This includes but is not limited to move in day(s), graduation(s), family weekend, homecoming and other campus wide initiatives and events.

The Assistant Director for Club Sport is the lead administrator for Club Sports.

Other duties as assigned.

Salary Information $21 to $23.50 an hour

Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor’s degree with significant experience in team management and recruitment. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills: Master’s degree in sport management, sport administration, higher education and administration, physical education, recreational management, or similar field. Experience with college age populations admission and recruitment, team management, developing student learning outcomes, leadership development, assessment, and applying student development theory. Certifications in CPR /First Aid/ AED and/or professional rescue a plus. Strong computer software knowledge including Excel, EMS , and website updates.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Experience administering a comprehensive club sport program, recruitment, leadership development, budgeting, team management, working with national governing bodies, working knowledge of several sports, as well as knowledge of college aged student identity development theory and application, assessment and evaluation skills, and at least two years of experience programming sport programs. Must possess excellent organization and communication skills, Microsoft office, and knowledge of or ability to learn and utilize computer software programs such as EMS .

Work Schedule and Hours This is a Temporary, Full-Time position with an early summer break and opportunity for re-employment contract late summer. The work schedule will be flexible based on the activities for which this person is responsible. There will be frequent evening and weekend hours, as well as travel for recruitment and tournaments.
