
Body Shop Tech - Welder/Hydraulics

The Body Tech/Fabricator is responsible for performing high-quality metal fabrication, cutting, welding, grinding, and structural repair on heavy‑duty truck and equipment bodies. This position requires the ability to read measurements accurately, interpret repair specifications, fabricate parts and components, and ensure structural integrity and safety compliance. The Body Fabricator works closely with Body Shop Technicians, Service Advisors, and Supervisors to complete repairs according to established procedures, OEM guidelines, and company safety standards.
This role requires precision, skilled craftsmanship, safe tool handling, and strict adherence to documentation and work order processes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Fabrication & Welding
Perform metal fabrication including cutting, shaping, forming, and assembling steel and aluminum components.
Weld structural and non‑structural components using MIG, TIG, stick, and other approved welding methods.
Fabricate replacement sections when OEM parts are not available.
Ensure welds meet structural integrity, alignment, and quality standards.
Perform grinding, smoothing, and finishing of welded surfaces to prepare for paint or reassembly.
Use torches, plasma cutters, and fabrication tools safely and effectively.
Measurement, Layout, and Fitment
Read and interpret measurements, diagrams, technical drawings, and repair orders.
Layout projects accurately using measuring tools, squares, levels, and templates.
Verify dimensions, tolerances, and alignment before welding or assembly.
Position and secure workpieces using clamps, jigs, or fixtures to ensure accuracy.
Assist with the repair or replacement of structural supports, brackets, body panels, and mounting points.
Fabricate brackets, gussets, reinforcement plates, steps, and guards as required.
Support the installation or modification of truck bodies, accessories, and custom assemblies.
Ensure finished work meets OEM specifications, safety requirements, and customer expectations.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance
Safely operate welding equipment, grinders, cutting torches, shears, brakes, and fabrication machinery.
Perform daily inspections and routine maintenance of fabrication tools and equipment.
Report damaged or unsafe equipment promptly and remove it from service until repaired.
Hydraulics Repair
Knowledge of hydraulic systems, flow, repair, etc.
Secondary Duties
Assist Body Shop Technicians during complex repairs or large fabrication tasks.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area in compliance with shop standards.
Assist in ordering materials such as steel stock, welding supplies, and consumables.
Support training of apprentices or new employees on basic welding and fabrication steps.
Customer Service Responsibilities
Communicate clearly and professionally regarding repair status and issues.
Provide accurate information on timelines and technical requirements.
Maintain a cooperative, solutions‑focused approach with Service, Parts, and Body Shop staff.
Demonstrate respect and professionalism in all interactions.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not supervise other employees.
May assist in mentoring apprentices or junior technicians as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Completion of welding or fabrication technical training preferred.
Experience
Minimum of two (2) years welding or metal fabrication experience preferred.
Experience in heavy‑duty truck, automotive, or equipment fabrication a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proficiency with MIG/TIG/stick welding techniques.
Ability to safely operate grinders, cutting torches, plasma cutters, sanders, and fabrication machinery.
Strong measuring, layout, and fabrication accuracy.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and repair instructions.
Understanding of metal thickness, heat control, warping prevention, and fit‑up.
Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Must be able to follow safety protocols strictly.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Frequent lifting and handling of materials up to 70 pounds.
Regular bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and working in awkward positions.
Exposure to welding fumes, grinding debris, loud noise, dust, and industrial chemicals.
Required use of PPE including welding helmet, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, and respirators where applicable.
Extended periods of standing and physical labor.
Accountability and Compliance
Responsible for accuracy and completeness of all fabrication tasks and documentation.
Required to follow OSHA, company safety rules, and welding/fabrication safety standards.
Must report any injuries, unsafe conditions, or equipment failures immediately.
Accountable for completing work within established timeframes and quality guidelines.
Ensures all work is documented accurately on repair orders and submitted per company policy.
