Providence, RI Bureau – 225 Dyer St, Providence, RI 02903, USA The Boston Globe is seeking a smart, curious, and dynamic business reporter to cover multiple industries as part of our fast-moving and flexible Rhode Island team. This role covers hospitals and health care, higher education, and the robust restaurant and hospitality industry in Rhode Island. You’ll learn something new every day, develop deep sources, and break news that makes you an authority on your beat. We’re also looking for someone who can write quick hits as well as step‑back pieces and powerful enterprise stories, deliver scoops, and ask tough questions that hold people in power accountable. You’ll be working at one of the strongest regional newspapers in the country, as part of an award‑winning team that is creative, collaborative, enterprising, and innovative. Responsibilities Conceive, report, and write stories about the health care, higher education, and hospitality industries in Rhode Island for digital and print. Develop sources that give you access to the major players and help you own coverage of these industries. Generate and pitch story ideas and accept assignments from editors. Write quick‑hits, well‑reported dailies, and intriguing enterprise – and be willing to work on multiple stories at a time. File clean, compelling copy on deadline. Learn and leverage SEO tools to help more people find your great work. Collaborate with reporters on the Rhode Island team as well as with colleagues in the Boston‑based newsroom – including the audience development, photo, video, audio, and data visualization teams – to tell stories across platforms and reach the widest audience possible. Qualifications At least three years of professional experience at a daily print or real‑time digital news organization. A digital‑first mindset and a willingness to tell stories across a variety of media. A collaborative spirit, good sense of humor, and commitment to creating an inclusive work environment. Multimedia experience (video, audio, data visualization) is a plus, but not required. Foreign language skills are a plus, but not required. A willingness to adapt and be audience‑focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment. This is a full‑time position based in our Providence, R.I., office, with a hybrid in‑person/remote option. Candidates should be based in Rhode Island or willing to move to the Greater Providence area. The hourly rate for this role is $38.41 – $61.53. This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.
