Job Title Director – Radiology
Occ Summary Performs responsible administrative work in directing, planning, and organizing activities within Radiology Services.
Work Performed
Administers and coordinates the functions of Radiology Services, including Diagnostic Radiology, Radiology Support Services, MRI, CT, Nuclear Medicine, Vascular/Interventional, Ultrasound, Peripheral Vascular Imaging, and Center for Women Mammography.
Provides guidance and direction to managers, supervisors, and team leads, ensuring an even flow of work assignments, personnel, and patients.
Develops, interprets, disseminates, and implements departmental and corporate policies, procedures, regulations, and performance improvement plans.
Maintains departmental compliance with JCAHO, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
Establishes systems and standards that promote patient safety and safe practices for delivering patient care.
Reviews departmental performance against established goals, implements changes for continual improvement, and ensures compliance with all internal and external standards, regulatory and legal requirements.
Ensures overall quality of services and adheres to the highest standards.
Develops quality improvement programs and competency assessment initiatives; reviews departmental operations for effectiveness using labor distribution, revenue versus disbursements, productivity analysis, and administrative conferences.
Directs assistance and resolves problems encountered by division managers, supervisors, and team leads regarding objectives, physical facilities, equipment, supply needs, personnel, organizational structure, work distribution, and operational processes.
Prepares the annual budget based on trends and consultations with division supervisors, radiologists, and the medical staff; manages department material needs, mechanical contractors, personnel, merit evaluations, new or modified equipment, and revenue increases.
Creates cost‑effective programs to meet budget goals; coordinates departmental purchases and manages stock levels, storage, and utilization.
Takes remedial action to resolve or improve deficient operational conditions, work patterns, personnel, and patient flows; coordinates with the Chairman of Radiology Services for corrective actions; assists in recruitment, selection, appointment, and personnel decisions.
Conducts regular inspections and observations of Radiology Services facilities and operations to ensure compliance with rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Consults with the Chairman of Radiology Services on policies, procedures, patient care standards, facility utilization, operational matters, audits, and key technical personnel decisions.
Represents the department in daily, weekly, and monthly conferences; may represent the department chairman in other medical aspects on request.
Collaborates with Medical Staff, Nursing, and other healthcare professionals to resolve interdepartmental problems.
Recommends equipment modifications, new equipment, essential construction, and personnel needs; assists in planning for new facilities and recommends facilities, equipment, and personnel requirements.
Recommends short, intermediate, and long‑term goals and objectives for departmental planning.
Coordinates adequate clinical engineering service for all diagnostic equipment, ensuring preventive maintenance schedules and reporting to the Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation.
Works with the Radiation Safety Officer to ensure radiologic safety, recommending programming, monitoring, and location of warning devices, and implementing the radioisotope committee’s recommendations.
Communicates regularly with all customers to meet service expectations; accountable for performance improvement and related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Extensive knowledge of modern hospital administration and related practices.
In-depth knowledge of accounting, finance, purchasing, personnel, facilities, office procedures, and records supporting departmental services.
Thorough knowledge of modern patient care and management principles as applied to radiologic technology.
Considerable knowledge of principles and procedures involved in operating radiologic equipment.
Ability to analyze operational data, employ approved management techniques, and achieve maximum effectiveness and efficiency.
Ability to coordinate division functions and activities for optimal operation and efficiency.
Ability to direct, instruct, and advise division supervisors in approved methods, procedures, and practices employed in effective administration.
Ability to receive and respond effectively to day‑to‑day problems presented by division supervisors and others.
Ability to interpret established policies into operational procedures and execute hospital programs.
Ability to work effectively with radiologists and other members of the medical staff as required.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
Education
Required registry/certification in applicable imaging modality: American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT), American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), or Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB).
Alternatively, Registration as a Nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Associate Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program, or a Master’s degree in a health or business‑related field.
Experience Five years of experience in Radiology as a Registered Nurse, Radiologic Technologist, MR, CT, Mammography, Nuclear Medicine, Sonography, or Interventional Radiology, including four years in a supervisory role; OR a Master’s degree in a health or business‑related field with five years of experience in Healthcare management, including two years in Radiology, supervisory experience, process improvement, and growing service lines.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications Certification as prescribed by ARRT, ARDMS/CCI, and/or NMTCB; OR a current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina.
