The Senior Piping Designer is responsible for leading the development, coordination, and execution of Building Information Modeling (BIM) efforts for piping systems within mechanical construction projects. This role ensures that all models are accurate, fully coordinated, and aligned with project requirements from preconstruction through installation. You will collaborate closely with project managers, engineering teams, detailing staff, field leadership, and other trades to support efficient fabrication and installation of piping systems. Success in this role requires advanced technical expertise, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining quality and schedule expectations. In this position, you will play a key role in optimizing workflows, resolving coordination challenges, and delivering constructible, fabrication-ready piping models. Your work will directly impact project efficiency, cost control, and overall project success. Key Responsibilities
Lead BIM coordination efforts for piping systems across multiple projects Develop, manage, and maintain detailed 3D piping models for fabrication and installation Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and field teams to ensure model accuracy and constructability Run and participate in coordination meetings with other trades to resolve clashes and design conflicts Oversee the creation and distribution of coordinated drawings, spool drawings, and fabrication packages Establish and enforce BIM standards, workflows, and best practices Manage model version control and ensure timely updates throughout the project lifecycle Support estimating and preconstruction teams with model-based takeoffs and planning Coordinate with fabrication shops to ensure piping models align with production capabilities and schedules Assist in developing installation strategies using BIM to improve field productivity Train and mentor BIM coordinators, piping designers, and detailing team members Evaluate and implement new BIM technologies and tools Ensure models meet project specifications, client requirements, and industry standards Support project closeout by delivering accurate as-built models and documentation Promote a strong culture of safety and quality in all BIM-related activities Perform additional duties as required Qualifications & Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience) Strong experience with BIM/VDC processes in piping or mechanical construction Proficiency in BIM software such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and related coordination tools Experience with piping design, detailing, and fabrication workflows preferred Strong understanding of piping systems, layouts, and construction sequencing Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment Excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills Strong organizational and time management abilities Effective communication and collaboration skills Experience leading teams or mentoring BIM/design staff preferred Knowledge of fabrication software and BIM integration is a plus Results-driven with a focus on accuracy, efficiency, and continuous improvement
