Capitol Bureau Chief Reporter
MONTANA PUBLIC RADIO (MTPR) invites applications for a Capitol Bureau Chief Reporter to produce news reports on legislative and state news for broadcast and publication at the Montana Public Radio office in Helena.
Responsibilities
Follow legislative committee hearings and debates, assess news value of state government issues and policy developments, conduct interviews, write, edit, and produce news stories.
Represent Montana Public Radio in Helena and answer public inquiries about the station and news policy.
Develop a working knowledge of the legislative process and public radio journalism traditions; work well in a team setting under deadline pressure.
Assist staff with state election coverage, including interviews with candidates and political analysts, newscast production, and election‑related content.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, political science or related fields.
Two (2) years of experience in a reporting role, preferably in public radio or television, emphasizing government agency and legislative issues.
Knowledge of journalism ethics and standards of objectivity, fairness, and balance.
Excellent speaking and writing skills.
Ability to research and comprehend complex issues and translate them into clear, concise news reports for broadcast.
Ability to interview, record, write, and digitally edit audio, video, and still photography files.
Professional demeanor and behavior, with the ability to interact with a wide variety of people.
Ability to post audio, video, and photography online across multiple platforms.
Ability to convert radio broadcast content to online posts.
Ability to perform under deadline pressures and highly emotional circumstances.
