Assistant Director of Public Works/Municipal Services

Responsibilities Under the general directions of the Director of Public Works, this position plans, directs, manages and oversees functions, programs, and personnel associated with Public Works Municipal Services including the divisions of Cemetery, Facilities Maintenance, Fleet Services, and Sanitation. Coordinates assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies. Performs administrative and supervisory work in directing the overall operations of the assigned divisions in the Public Works Department for all non‑utility divisions. Supervises employees and develops work schedules for day‑to‑day work activities to provide optimum efficiency and productivity. Performs duties with considerable independence and latitude in supervising and in being responsible for technical and administrative functions. Position requires an advanced understanding and wide application of principles, theories, and concepts in assigned function or operation. Supervises subordinates through oral and written reports based upon personal observation.

The work entails managing, coaching, and developing employees. Position requires extensive expertise and knowledge in specialized functions or business areas that can be used to develop policies and procedures as well as determining efficient and innovative ways to accomplish the organization’s business strategies. Work is evaluated through conferences and review of progress reports.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in public administration, architecture, civil engineering, construction management or closely related field.

Five (5) years of government managerial experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience in Public Works management or supervision will be considered. Possess at least four (4) years of experience in engineering, architectural, administrative, construction management or other public works experience; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

Must have National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification (level to be determined by job classification requirements) or obtain within one year of employment.

Must have a valid Florida driver’s license with satisfactory driving record throughout employment.

In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications listed above, an individual must be able to perform each of the established essential functions to perform this job successfully.
