The Copy Editor is responsible for overseeing the production of the written content for The Sun Star, ensuring it meets the publication’s standards for accuracy, clarity, and journalistic integrity. Working closely with the Editor‑in‑Chief, the Copy Editor reviews, refines, and fact‑checks articles across a range of topics, including campus news, student life, the outdoors, and community coverage in Fairbanks and North Pole. The role also involves mentoring reporters, helping maintain consistent style and tone across the publication, and supporting the management on the uafsunstar.com website.
We’re seeking a candidate with exceptional writing, editing, and attention to detail, and a strong understanding of AP Style and journalism conventions. The copy editor ensures all work is accurate, clear, and consistent, mentoring reporters to strengthen their work. Candidates should demonstrate strong organizational skills, digital literacy, and the ability to manage editorial workflows, including online content. Success in this role requires the ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and support a collaborative team environment, helping maintain the quality of The Sun Star across print and digital platforms.
Minimum Qualifications Part‑time enrollment at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is required. 6 or more credits and a GPA of 2.0 minimum. Prior experience in journalism, editing, or a student‑run publication is strongly preferred, with demonstrated leadership experience considered a plus. Candidates should possess strong computer skills and proficiency with digital publishing, editing, and collaboration tools. A solid understanding of journalistic standards, including AP‑style, and experience managing or contributing to editorial workflows is highly desirable.
Position Details This position is located on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus in Fairbanks. This is a part‑time, student assistant position. Priority deadline is April 20, 2026. Position open until filled.
