Company Description Outset (joinoutset.com) is a pre-college academic camp hosted at leading colleges and universities for teens interested in healthcare and medical careers. Outset is designed to help high school students explore what it takes to become a healthcare professional and what healthcare careers are really like.

Role Description We are looking for an experienced, responsible and highly organized candidate who can support our UNC Camp Director and co-manage our UNC camps this summer. This is a 24/7 role during camp hours (see below) and requires someone who brings positive and creative energy, a passion for working with teens, and enthusiasm even while working long hours. Assistant Directors must be 25 years old, and we require prior camp or educational leadership experience.

Responsibilities In general the Assistant Director will assist the Camp Director with everything required to provide our students with a safe and educational experience at UNC-Chapel Hill. Responsibilities include:

Act as the second leader, ready to assume leadership in the Camp Director’s absence.

Support and mentor all Outset seasonal staff in day-to-day responsibilities.

Monitor camper experience, addressing behavioral, social, or group dynamic concerns.

Assist with parent/guardian communications, including daily updates and addressing concerns.

Coordinate scheduling adjustments when last-minute changes arise (e.g., staff coverage, etc)

Lead the set-up and breakdown of camp spaces and activities each week.

Provide on-the-ground leadership during transitions, meals, and camp-wide activities.

Support risk management and enforcement of safety policies.

Assist with staff training, mentorship and performance evaluations.

Assist with camper and material transportation by serving as a driver when needed.

Serve as contact for assigned academic and healthcare speakers, including being present in assigned academic spaces for oversight as needed.

Qualifications

Experience working with youth in an academic, camp, or residential environment.

Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively engage with staff, campers, and families

Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills

Flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of a dynamic and fast-paced camp environment

Locations, Dates & Working hours

Location: UNC-Chapel Hill campus

Dates: June 1 - July 25, 2026 (8 weeks)

Hours: Working or "on-call" 24/7 while camps are in session: Sunday 12pm to Friday 5pm. From Friday at 5pm until Sunday at 12pm you are free and have time off. You will have one other evening off each week during camp.

Compensation, Housing, Meals Compensation is $1,000 - $1,500/week, depending on experience, plus a bonus opportunity. You will be provided with a private dorm room at UNC and meals during the week plus a $50 weekend meal stipend. If you are traveling from out of state we will also cover one roundtrip flight to RDU airport.
