Institute and Center Overview The Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS) at UC Berkeley promotes teaching and research on East Asia and Southeast Asia in all disciplines and professional programs. The Center for Southeast Asia Studies (CSEAS), founded in 1960, focuses on the countries of Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, Vietnam) and the region as a whole.
Responsibilities Involves designing, conducting, promoting, and supporting various research and public educational programs at the Center for Southeast Asia Studies (60%) and Core Institute (40%), including conferences, workshops, faculty support programs, student fellowships, contract and grant administration, and other academic and public programs. Tasks include:
Plan and develop new programs and curriculum, adjusting existing ones in a research and education environment.
Collaborate with the Faculty Chair and Executive Committee on long‑range strategic planning for research and public educational programs.
Develop constituencies and promote programs to target audiences; serve as institutional liaison to peer research institutions locally, nationally, and abroad.
Assist the Faculty Chair in recruiting, selecting, orienting, and evaluating prospective program partners.
Manage the Visiting Scholar Program, including application approval, arrival procedures, visa compliance, and problem‑solving.
Develop evaluation tools for programs and adjust them based on participant feedback and interest.
Assist in implementing specific activities for fundraising programs, including grant writing and proposal development.
Conduct research on potential donors and assist with related program events.
Plan and schedule programs and identify topics.
Work with the IEAS Business Manager to develop, prepare, and reconcile the program budget.
Ensure accurate financial processing of accounts payable and receivable and smooth daily operations.
Serve as work leader for junior staff and student assistants, providing training or mentoring where appropriate.
Required Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of the functional area and understanding of how work may impact other areas.
Strong analytical skills for conducting analysis and developing recommendations.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures.
Skill in delivering programs and understanding current research in Southeast Asia.
Proficiency in at least one Southeast Asian language.
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a related area and/or equivalent experience or training.
Preferred Qualifications
Continuing education in a related field.
Salary & Benefits The budgeted salary or hourly range for this position is $63,000 – $85,700. This full‑time, 40‑hour‑per‑week, exempt, monthly‑paid position is eligible for UC benefits. The role is initially split between the Center for Southeast Asia Studies (60%) and Core Institute (40%).
