Overview
Position Title: Assistant Golf Course Superintendent
Reports To: Golf Course Superintendent
Job Type: Full-Time, Exempt
Greens & Grounds Department The Greens & Grounds Department at Columbia Country Club ensures the beauty, playability, and health of the golf course and surrounding landscapes. Through expert turf care, landscaping, and precision mowing, the team maintains pristine fairways, greens, and roughs. Every detail is managed to create an exceptional experience for members and guests while promoting the long-term health and aesthetics of the course.
Position Summary Working closely with the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent is responsible for supervising staff, implementing agronomic programs, and assisting with planning and execution of course maintenance operations. This role offers the opportunity to have hands-on involvement in all aspects of a high-performing golf course operation, with a strong emphasis on leadership, agronomy, and championship-level conditioning.
Responsibilities
Lead and execute daily course setup and maintenance operations to meet championship standards
Operate turf equipment and machinery, including mowers, utility vehicles, and aerators, safely and efficiently
Perform advanced water management practices on push-up Poa annua greens
Manage irrigation system operation, troubleshooting, and optimization
Calibrate, apply, and assist in planning fertilizer and pesticide programs
Identify turf diseases and implement proactive management strategies
Supervise, train, and develop a team of 20+ staff members
Participate in Green Committee meetings, including preparation and presentation of materials
Assist with long-term planning and execution of capital improvement projects, tournaments, and special events
Maintain clubhouse grounds and overall property presentation
Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the Golf Course Superintendent and/or General Manager
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or associate degree in Turfgrass Management or a related field is preferred
Pesticide applicator license, or ability to obtain within 90 days
Proven ability to perform at a high level in a team-oriented, results-driven environment
Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines professionally
Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills when interacting with staff, members, and guests
Self-motivated, with a positive, growth-oriented mindset
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and quick to learn new systems
Willingness to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, and on-call shifts as required
