Underwriter Position
Location: Johnston, RI As an Underwriter, you play a critical role in driving profitable growth while protecting the integrity of our portfolio. You will evaluate, select, and price risks in alignment with underwriting guidelines, balancing sound risk assessment with exceptional service to our agency partners. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented, analytical professional who thrives in a collaborative environment and enjoys building strong producer relationships while making thoughtful, data-driven decisions. Risk Evaluation & Portfolio Management Review, evaluate, and rate new and renewal business in accordance with underwriting guidelines and authority levels. Assess risk eligibility, prior loss history, catastrophe exposure, and frequency/severity trends. Analyze inspections, endorsements, cancellations, and exception requests. Handle higher-value risks within delegated authority. Ensure accurate rating and documentation using underwriting systems and tools. Request and review supplemental documentation to support underwriting decisions. Contribute to production and loss analysis reports, surveys, and portfolio studies as needed. Maintain compliance with federal, state, and company regulations and underwriting standards. Agency & Customer Partnership Build and maintain strong relationships with appointed producers to drive new business and retention. Provide guidance to agents regarding submissions, risk acceptability, and underwriting appetite. Participate in agency management activities and support growth initiatives. Respond to policyholder and prospect inquiries with professionalism and accuracy. Collaboration & Teamwork Partner cross-functionally with Underwriting, Operations, Product, Claims, and Sales teams. Contribute to underwriting-related projects and process improvement initiatives. Communicate clearly and professionally with internal and external stakeholders. What You Bring Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred. Minimum 3 years of property & casualty agency or carrier experience. At least 1 year of underwriting experience required. Working knowledge of underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and standard industry practices. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communication abilities. Demonstrated customer service mindset and relationship-building skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and online research tools. Ability to manage changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-directed. Collaborative, solutions-focused approach to teamwork.
