Position Overview Director of Development (DoD) – responsible for fundraising for the College of Veterinary Medicine under the interim Vice President of External Affairs. The DoD creates engagement programs, secures major gifts exceeding $400,000 annually, develops strategic plans, and manages a portfolio of prospective donors.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, maintain, and cultivate a portfolio of prospective major donors, identifying, qualifying, soliciting, and stewarding prospects within an established gift range.

Ensure fundraising goals are met through proposal writing, campaign management, and stewardship activities.

Write solicitation proposals for individual, corporate, and foundation prospects, tailoring opportunities to donor interests and the University’s priorities.

Track progress using Raiser’s Edge, reporting portfolio performance and campaign results to leadership.

Collaborate with marketing, alumni relations, events, and other departments to design integrated donor engagement and stewardship campaigns.

Maintain compliance with policies, prospect management protocols, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements (FERPA, HIPAA).

Recruit, train, and support volunteers for advancement efforts and donor solicitation coordination.

Support other fundraising activities, attend events, and perform additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Proven major‑gift mastery and moves management with a data‑driven approach.

Strategic fundraising with alignment to institutional priorities.

Broad understanding of individual, corporate, and foundation fundraising, donor stewardship, and pipeline development.

Leadership through influence, mentoring, and collaboration with deans, faculty, and senior administrators.

Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication, including persuasive proposal writing and executive‑level briefings.

Project and portfolio management, prioritization across multiple initiatives, and delivery against ambitious goals.

Data and systems proficiency with advancement CRM (Raiser’s Edge, RENXT, Banner) and analytics.

Commitment to ethical standards, confidentiality, and compliance (CASE, Donor Bill of Rights, FERPA, HIPAA).

Analytical and critical thinking with risk assessment and process optimization.

Digital fundraising, online giving, email, social media, and content strategy for donor acquisition and stewardship.

Cultural competence and inclusive donor engagement reflective of humanistic values.

Demonstrated respect, compassion, integrity, and collaborative workplace culture.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

Minimum 4 years of fundraising experience, including closing major gifts from individuals; proven track record of achieving ambitious goals.

Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced fundraising education or certifications.

Experience with university advancement or higher education.

Knowledge of veterinary or health sciences fundraising.

Work Schedule Full‑time. 8 AM – 5 PM, with some nights and weekends as required.

Physical Demands & Work Environment Requires frequent use of hands and arms for PC use; occasional lifting up to 10 pounds. Clear vision, volume, and hearing required. Work performed in a typical office setting, usually in others’ offices with a quiet environment.

Compensation Minimum: $115,000.00 annually – Maximum: $125,000.00 annually.

Pay Transparency Act Statement Western University of Health Sciences is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The estimate considers factors such as experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
