Position Summary Kings is searching for an aspiring candidate to join an outstanding school district and highly successful food service program. This position offers the opportunity to learn alongside an experienced Food Service Director while stepping into a role previously held by a dedicated employee of over 20 years.
In cooperation with the Food Service Director, assist in administering and supervising the district’s child nutrition program. This includes operations across six school buildings within the Kings Local School District, and contracted food service operations provided to external partner districts, St. Margaret of York, and Lockland City Schools.
The Assistant Director will provide oversight, through the support of the Food Service Director, to the daily operations while maintaining compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. This will include managing staff, ensuring the production of nutritious meals, and providing effective customer service to the students we serve, while ensuring consistency in quality, financial accountability, and regulatory compliance with health and safety regulations.
Performance Responsibilities
Participate in staff scheduling, securing daily coverage for school operations as needed
Assist in the daily operations across school buildings (PreK–12), providing supervisory support as well as kitchen support during unexpected staff absences
Provide collaboration with Head Cooks to ensure operational compliance with federal and state regulations
Perform weekly orders, securing food inventories, while maintaining communications with food vendors and local suppliers
Provide operational leadership for external food service partnerships SMOY (St Margaret of York) and Lockland City Schools
Inspect school lunch facilities, including but not limited to safety and sanitation, operation of equipment, and food quality
Coordinate production, transportation, and service models for off-site locations
Monitors production records, temperature logs, and meal records (CN 6, CN 7) to ensure compliance
Assist with monitoring standard operating procedures across all kitchens and service sites
Provide testing of new recipes, assisting with the entry of recipes in the nutrition meal software
Ensure food supplies are monitored while providing effective communication to vendors
Accommodate special dietary needs and food allergies, while making medical notes into the cafeteria POS (point of sale) software for allergens, food intolerances for students
Promote student engagement and participation in meal programs through student surveys
Reporting and Fiscal Management
Assists the Food Service Director in monitoring meal receipts for daily reporting of meal sales
Schedule requested catering events with staff while ordering food and supplies as needed
Assist with the collection of student meal debt, handling parental inquiries through making calls to parents, processing emails, and communicating through other sources (ie, talking points)
Assist with monitoring food safety, sanitation, and HACCP plans across all sites, as defined by the Food Service Director
Assist as needed with the collection and/or entry of free and reduced meal applications
Staff Supervision & Training Support
Assisting the Food Service Director in the hiring process of new staff, supported by the training of new staff
Support the needs of staff for both in-district kitchens and any off-site service needs
Provide ongoing professional development as supported through Public School Works training
Promote a positive, customer-focused culture
Assist in continual education for staff, including but not limited to meal preparation, meal program requirements, operation of equipment, and point of sale (POS) operations
Qualifications PREFERRED
Education and experience as required by the Professional Standards outlined in HHFKA a) Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education with academic major in food and nutrition, food sv mgmt, dietetics, family/consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field, or, b) Bachelor’s degree in any academic major and state recognized certificate for school nutrition directors or equivalent education with academic major, and state recognized certificate for school nutrition directors, or, c) Bachelor’s degree in any academic major and at least 2 years related school nutrition experience, or, d) Associate’s degree or equivalent experience with academic major in above stated specific majors and at least 2 years related school nutrition experience.
ServSafe Manager Certification
Minimum of 2 years of relevant School Nutrition Program, supervisory experience (K–12)
Knowledge of USDA Child Nutrition Programs and regulations
Experience with MS Office (Word, Excel)
Registered Dietitian (RD) or School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) credential
Experience managing multi-site operations and/or contracted services
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, able to pivot and adapt to ongoing change
Working Conditions
Regular travel between 6 district buildings and external partner sites
A combination of office work, assisting with food production, and operations as needed
Physical activity, including standing, walking, and lifting, is required
Successful completion of BCI/FBI background checks
