Responsibilities
The
Underwriter - Healthcare Management Liability
is responsible for submission generation, underwriting and policy issuance of Directors and Officers Liability, Employment Practices Liability, Fiduciary Liability, Fidelity/Crime for large and complex private commercial and not‑for‑profit healthcare organizations. The underwriting position will be part of the Berkley Healthcare Financial Lines division of Berkley Healthcare. The candidate will be responsible for handling new and renewal, primary and excess business throughout the placement process from underwriting submission receipt to policy issuance.
Key functions include but are not limited to the following:
Determine risk acceptability in accordance with underwriting risk appetite and guidelines
Prepare thorough underwriting analyses with detailed exposure analysis and independent underwriter assessment
Make pricing, coverage, terms and conditions determinations and recommendations within defined limits/authority and underwriting guidelines and authority parameters
Develop, grow and maintain a profitable, diversified book of business aligned with company goals
Ensure production and loss ratio goals are achieved for assigned book by reviewing, analyzing and evaluating information and taking appropriate action as necessary.
Develop positive agency relationships within assigned territory while maintaining a good rapport through responsive levels of service
Coordinate marketing activities including travel in coordination with BHC colleagues including the BHC Distribution Lead
Foster growth of less experienced staff in a positive and growth-oriented environment
Actively self‑educate as to line of business, industry and insurance trends including exposures, claims, legal, legislative, healthcare, current events, self‑improvement and innovation
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college
Minimum 5 years of recent experience in financial lines underwriting , with a proven track record of success.
Specialized experience in healthcare financial lines underwriting
is highly preferred.
Comprehensive knowledge of financial lines products , including coverages, policy forms, and industry standards.
Exceptional organizational skills , with the ability to manage complex underwriting files and maintain efficient workflow processes.
Strong customer service orientation , with a commitment to delivering high‑quality client experience.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills , with the ability to convey complex information clearly and professionally.
Effective desk management capabilities , including prioritization, time management, and attention to detail.
Self‑motivated and independent , while remaining accountable to team objectives and company goals.
Demonstrated ability to take calculated risks
and apply sound business judgment in underwriting decisions.
Strategic mindset , with a solid understanding of business drivers and the ability to contribute to bottom‑line results.
Willingness to travel occasionally (less than 15%)
as required by the role.

Base Salary Range: $130,000–$150,000
