Citi’s Commercial Lending Management (CLM) group is a core, in‑business credit organization supporting Citi’s U.S. Commercial Bank. CLM partners closely with Relationship Managers and Independent Risk to deliver disciplined underwriting, sound portfolio risk management, and tailored lending solutions for commercial clients. We are seeking an Assistant Vice President, Commercial Credit to join the CLM team in Houston, one of Citi’s most strategic commercial banking markets. This role provides hands‑on underwriting responsibility, portfolio oversight, and increasing credit authority, while partnering closely with senior Credit Officers and relationship teams. This is a strong opportunity for experienced credit professionals ready to step beyond Associate‑level execution and take on greater ownership, judgment, and leadership within commercial credit.
Role Overview The AVP, Commercial Credit supports and, where delegated, independently executes underwriting and portfolio management activities for a portfolio of commercial banking clients. The role is responsible for preparing and reviewing credit approvals, assessing risk, and supporting ongoing monitoring across multiple lending products. The position requires sound credit judgment, strong financial analysis skills, and the ability to operate with limited supervision, while still partnering closely with senior underwriters and risk stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities Credit Underwriting & Risk Assessment
Prepare, review, and challenge
Credit Approval Memoranda (CAMs)
to ensure accuracy, completeness, and strong risk analysis
Support and, as appropriate, independently recommend
credit decisions, risk ratings, and regulatory classifications
Perform detailed financial analysis, projection modeling, and stress testing
Evaluate transaction strengths, weaknesses, and key risk factors across a range of commercial lending products
Portfolio Management & Monitoring
Support and lead ongoing portfolio monitoring activities, including
Annual Reviews (ARs), Quarterly Reviews (QRs), and Criticized Credit Reviews (CCRs)
Track covenant compliance, exposure levels, and emerging credit concerns
Proactively identify, elevate, and help mitigate potential risk issues
Execution, Controls & Governance
Ensure transactions comply with Citi credit policies, underwriting standards, and regulatory requirements
Support internal risk reviews and audits (e.g., FCR, COBRA, IA) and regulatory exam responses
Maintain a strong First Line of Defense control mindset
Stakeholder Partnership & Leadership
Act as a key credit partner to Relationship Managers, product teams, and Independent Risk
Participate in client discussions related to credit matters
Provide guidance, coaching, and oversight to junior analysts or associates
Contribute to process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and controls
Qualifications & Experience
2–5 years of experience
in commercial credit underwriting, portfolio management, or credit risk
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field
Strong understanding of financial statements, cash flow analysis, and credit structuring
Ability to exercise sound judgment and clearly articulate a credit view
Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills
Experience within a large bank, regional bank, or industry‑focused commercial lender
Exposure to middle‑market or specialized lending (e.g., energy, industrials, services)
Familiarity with Citi credit processes is helpful, but not required
$96,400.00 - $144,600.00
