POSITION SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the Tribal Information Services Director, incumbent is responsible for the production and editing of the Tribal newspaper, annual report, calendar, and special publications; direction of news coverage; management of the Drum’s website; and supervision of staff members. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Administers the personnel management function of the division to include employee recruitment, orientation, supervision, scheduling of assignments and leave, counseling, disciplinary actions, performance evaluations, awards, training and skills development, and termination, in accordance with Tribal Personnel Policies and Procedures. Serves as The Southern Ute Drum’s editor-in-chief and determines the nature and scope of information released by the Drum in consultation with tribal leaders and the director of Tribal Information Services. Provides detailed, accurate, and relevant information to the Southern Ute tribal membership and the public by various means, including the newspaper, website, annual report and other projects. Directs the overall design and content of the newspaper, website, annual report, social media channels, and other projects. Develops and administers budgets for The Southern Ute Drum. Oversees the Southern Ute Drum’s physical and digital archives. Coordinating with the Media Archivist on archive requests and documentation in a professional and culturally sensitive manner, while prioritizing the preservation of physical and digital assets of the newspaper for future generations. Communicates and coordinates with the Tribal Information Services Director on division activities and issues critical to the Tribe and its public relations. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with tribal staff, the tribal membership, the Southern Ute Indian Tribal Council, other Native American tribes, local and regional media outlets, public relations sources, public and private agencies, contractors, and vendors. Consistently monitors division operations, events, and activities, identifying and recommending programmatic and procedural changes to the Tribal Information Services director. Coordinates with the Indigenous Journalists Association, Colorado Press Association, and Society of Professional Journalists on programming, annual membership, educational opportunities, and media awards. Performs all job duties in a culturally sensitive manner while recognizing the importance of preserving Southern Ute culture and tribal sovereignty. Acts as the Tribal Information Services Department Director when required. Provides cross-training to other department employees on division skills and procedures to ensure effective backups are available. Represents the tribe at internal and external events in a professional and culturally sensitive manner. Participates in a positive, supportive, and team-oriented environment. Performs other job-related duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS Must have a BA in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Business, or related field, OR an AA in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Business, or related field and 3 years of experience in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or closely related field, OR5 years of experience in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or closely related field, OR s uccessful completion of a Southern Ute Indian Tribe Apprentice program. Must have 1 year of supervisory experience. Must have 1 year of computer experience in the Mac OS X environment and Microsoft Word and Excel. Must have experience in newspaper production and knowledge of website design principles and computer-aided layout. Must be proficient in writing with attention to grammar, spelling, AP style and economy of words, and be proficient in editing and proofreading written materials. Must have general knowledge of budget development and administration. Must have a valid Driver’s License for state of residency and be insurable under the Tribal vehicle insurance policy. Must pass a thorough background check including Criminal History, fingerprint check, and pre-employment drug test. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of PeopleSoft or other ERP financials module.
